Golden Tulip Candolim, Goa

So I’ve stayed at the Golden Tulip Candolim a few times now, and honestly, it’s one of those places that grows on you. When you first pull up to the property on that narrow stretch near Bamonvaddo – and trust me, your taxi driver will probably ask for directions at least once – you might wonder if you’re in the right spot. It’s tucked away from the main Candolim beach road, which actually turns out to be a blessing because you don’t get the constant honking and late-night party noise that some of the beachfront places deal with.

The thing about this hotel is that it feels properly Goan without trying too hard, you know? The lobby has this warm, lived-in quality with dark wood and local artwork that doesn’t scream “tourist trap.” Check-in is usually smooth, though I’d recommend arriving after 2 PM because they’re pretty strict about that. The staff – especially this guy Rohan at the front desk – actually remembers you if you’ve been there before, which is rare for a five-star place. Now, about that five-star rating… look, it’s comfortable and well-maintained, but it’s more like a really good four-star that’s trying hard. The rooms are spacious enough, AC works great (crucial in Goa’s humidity), and the bathrooms are modern, though the shower pressure can be hit or miss depending on which floor you’re on.

What I really love is the pool area – it’s got this relaxed vibe where you can actually read a book without someone trying to sell you jet ski rides every five minutes. The restaurant serves decent Goan fish curry, though honestly, you’ll want to venture out to Souza Lobo or Fisherman’s Wharf for the really good stuff. Speaking of getting out, the beach is about a seven-minute walk through some residential streets, and while it’s not the most scenic route, you’ll pass this little bakery that does amazing poi bread in the mornings. The hotel provides beach towels, which is handy, and they don’t make a fuss if you bring them back sandy. Parking is free and there’s actually enough space, unlike some places in Candolim where you’re playing car Tetris. I mean, for the price point – especially during off-season – it’s solid value. The 7.6 rating feels about right; it’s not going to blow your mind, but it won’t disappoint either, and sometimes that’s exactly what you want for a Goa getaway.
