Gora Kadan

250-0408 Kanagawa, Hakone, Gora 1300, Japan 9.3/10

Gora Kadan Overview

Look, I’ve stayed at my share of fancy hotels in Japan, but Gora Kadan hits different – and I mean that in the best way possible. This place started life as a summer retreat for the Imperial family back in 1952, which honestly explains a lot about why everything feels so… intentional. You know how some luxury hotels try too hard? This isn’t that. When you pull up to the traditional wooden entrance (parking’s handled by staff, thank god, because those mountain roads are no joke), it’s like stepping into someone’s incredibly sophisticated home rather than a hotel lobby.

The location in Gora is actually perfect if you know Hakone at all. You’re tucked away from the tourist chaos down in Hakone-Yumoto, but the Gora Station is literally a five-minute walk – which matters because that’s your lifeline to the rest of the area via the mountain railway. I mean, you could easily spend days just soaking in their outdoor onsen baths without leaving the property, but you’d be missing out on being so close to the Hakone Open-Air Museum and that whole artsy scene up here. The sound situation is ideal too – quiet enough that you’ll actually hear the bamboo creaking in the wind, but not so isolated that you feel cut off.

What really gets me about this place is how they’ve nailed that balance between traditional ryokan hospitality and actual comfort. The rooms – well, they’re more like suites really – have those gorgeous tatami areas that flow into modern spaces without feeling forced. Each one has its own private onsen, which honestly spoiled me for every other hot spring hotel. There’s something about soaking in mineral-rich water while looking out at the mountains that just… resets you, I guess. The kaiseki dinners are the real deal too – not the simplified tourist version you sometimes get. They’re using ingredients from right here in the region, and the presentation is almost too beautiful to eat. Almost. The staff somehow manages to be incredibly attentive without hovering, which takes serious skill.

I will say, this isn’t a place you stumble into casually – both the rates and the reservation situation require some planning. But that 9.3 rating isn’t inflated marketing nonsense. It’s earned through those little details that most places miss: the way they time the evening turndown service, how the breakfast feels personally crafted rather than buffet-standard, even how they handle the whole shoe situation seamlessly. If you’re doing Hakone right – maybe combining it with time in Tokyo or making it part of a proper Japan trip – Gora Kadan is where you go to understand why people get obsessed with Japanese hospitality. Just book early, especially for autumn when the leaves change and everyone wants to be exactly where you’ll be sitting.

It’s a top property with world class service

What could be improved: The massage chairs are outdated and need an update in the Saloon.

The estate of Gora Kadan is immaculate and beautiful. It also snowed during our visit and made it even more romantic. I loved walking around in the traditional wear (the vest for winter was an excellent touch). I loved how spacious the hotel was and multiple rooms (lounge, reading room, onsen, hallways) to explore and enjoy the serenity. The onsen (both private and public) were well stocked with towels, drinks, brushes, lotions and everything you would need. I went every day to take advantage of the amenities. The staff and service was incredible. Our host stayed with us the whole trip and made sure our stay was perfect. Language was not an issue for us! We were a family of 6 (split into two rooms) but they accommodated a banquet room for us to enjoy our meal together. While the price is premium, i truly believe it was great value - considering the history of the estate, the breakfast and dinner kaiseki was 5 stars in quality and presentation and the services they offered (public bath). I would absolutely return

What could be improved: The description of the room (at the time of booking) read "private onsen". However, this is a bit misleading as the private onsen is not attached to the room but an option for you to book. While not a big issue (as we were able to book once during our stay - although the times were limited by the time we did), it should be clarified that this is not attached to the room.

Great onsen and facilities. Spacious room.

What could be improved: Dinner and breakfast could be improved.
Staff were nice but exactly at 11 am they opened doors of our room for check out which I found slightly uncomfortable.

The service was sublime. The in-room meals were an incredible experience; attention to detail like no other meal I've ever eaten. A few flavours less palatable for the westerners, but overall we just loved it. We particularly loved the Japanese breakfast. Special thanks to Shizuka for taking such good care of us.

The outdoor onsen was also lovely - especially when dark outside.

What could be improved: It's a pricey experience! Could have used more comfortable furniture for during the day. The beds were amazing though.

The kaiseki meals were good, breakfast especially. Staff were extremely polite and helpful. The hotel itself is beautiful.

What could be improved: Some of the facilities/rooms are dated, noticeably so.
