GOTO RETREAT by Onko Chishin Overview

Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of places in Japan, but GOTO RETREAT by Onko Chishin honestly caught me off guard – and I mean that in the best possible way. Tucked up in Kamisakiyamacho, about twenty minutes from central Goto (which, let’s be real, isn’t exactly bustling anyway), this place feels like someone’s incredibly sophisticated mountain hideaway that they’ve decided to share with the world. The approach is kind of dramatic too – you wind up this narrow road thinking you might’ve taken a wrong turn, then suddenly there it is, all clean lines and natural materials perched on the hillside like it grew there.

What really gets me is how they’ve nailed that whole “luxury without trying too hard” thing that so many places completely botch. The rooms – well, they’re more like suites honestly – have these massive windows that frame the Goto Islands landscape like living artwork. I spent way too much time just sitting there with my morning coffee, watching the light change over the hills. The staff actually knows your name after day one (not in a creepy way, just… genuine), and they’ll casually mention things like the best time to catch the sunset from the terrace or which local fishing boats bring in the freshest catch. Speaking of food, their restaurant sources everything locally – I’m talking vegetables from farms you can literally see from your window and seafood that was probably swimming yesterday morning. The kaiseki dinners are exceptional, though honestly, even their simple breakfast setup with house-made tofu and perfectly grilled fish had me questioning why hotel food is usually so forgettable.

Here’s the thing though – this isn’t your typical resort experience where everything’s laid out for you. Goto itself is pretty remote (that’s sort of the point), so you’re not walking to convenience stores or hopping on trains to Tokyo. But if you’re looking to actually disconnect and experience this quieter side of Nagasaki Prefecture, it’s perfect. The onsen overlooking the valley is incredible at night – just you, the stars, and the sound of wind through the trees. I’d definitely recommend renting a car if you want to explore the island properly, though the hotel can arrange drivers. Oh, and fair warning – the place fills up during autumn when the leaves change, so book early if you’re planning around that time. It’s definitely worth the splurge if you want something genuinely special rather than just another nice hotel room.

Discover transformative healing hotels that combine ancient wellness traditions with modern therapeutic treatments, providing guests with restorative experiences that rejuvenate both body and mind.

The hotel is out of this world! Sleek architecture and decoration, the infinity ocean view, the unbelievably good quality in breakfast & dinners, but most importantly the friendly, helpful staff. Special thanks to Ryo-san, Asami-san & Syun-san, who have made our time even better!

What could be improved: Not about the property but transport within island can be tricky, and reaching a beach is tricky. There is no pool in the hotel.

The hotel was quiet, private and very relaxing. The room itself was very well designed and looked amazing, and the view was stunning.
The staff were very helpful and friendly.

The seaside location and the ocean front view from the room was fantastic. The general layout and design of the bathroom (including the exterior onsen), and the materials used was excellent; it conveyed upscale quality worthy of a boutique hotel at the price point it was charging. The interior decoration and choice of furnishings conveyed a serene sense of Japanese luxury. All in all, the hotel rooms exceeded my expectations.

What could be improved: The hotel could have more amenities. For example, while the architectural design of the lobby was impressive, the bar area was rather small and there was a lack of lounge area where guests could hang out with perhaps light snacks and complimentary drinks served. For the hotel rooms, the sizeable and numerous window blinds were manually operated (I was expecting electrically operated ones at the price point the hotel was charging); had electric blinds been installed, this would have completed the luxurious experience that's worthy of the awesome rooms.

This hotel was beautiful and the views of the ocean and mountain landscape were spectacular. The staff was so kind and accommodating. The room and facilities were clean and comfortable. The breakfast was quick, and delicious and the drinks at the bar were well-made. I can not say enough nice things about this hotel. One of my favorite stays and Amila-san and Ryo-san were exceptional hosts.

What could be improved: We will have to stay longer and plan ahead more to enjoy dinner and the bike rentals to see more local attractions.

What could be improved: They are overly rigid with the breakfast and dinner meal plan. This is the first hotel in the world where I wasn’t able to eat on premise because I didn’t pre-purchase a meal plan. I have visited nearly 90 countries. This is entirely unacceptable, too inflexible. The location is very difficult to reach which is part of the appeal. However, they should provide a free driver for ferry pickups vs. having guests rely upon their wits and taxis that don’t accept credit cards.

The location is outstanding, the design of the hotel and rooms is breathtaking, the menu dinner at hotel restaurant was a beautiful experience. Walk-in shower and amenities were above expectations and of course the private onsen on the terrace is divine.

What could be improved: Small (language) misunderstanding regarding the choice between the western style and japanese style breakfasts

The staff were fantastic. Amila looked after us so well the whole time and really made us feel cared for and made our stay. Our honeymoon was perfect and so glad we chose Goto Ray Retreat. The team even wrote us a personal congratulations and welcome card for us on arrival! Chef Ko Takahira is a real artist and his food was amazing. He sources fresh fish from the market himself daily which really speaks to the quality of his dishes. We would definitely stay again. Shame we couldn't stay longer. Thank you so much Amila and staff! :)

What could be improved: There actually wasn't anything we didn't like about our stay or the resort. 11/10!

The hospitality and friendliness of the staff was outstanding. They helped us with everything we could possibly need, from car rental and taxi organisation to dinner reservations and recommendations on what to do and explore on the island. Breakfast and dinner were great and the view from the room was the best. The room was spacious, the beds were comfortable and the onsen bath on the balcony was a great addition to our stay. We absolutely loved our 2 nights at Goto Retreat and will definitely come back.
