HOTEL OVERVIEW
Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to the Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa in Point Clear – I mean, Alabama isn’t exactly the first place that comes to mind when you think luxury resort, right? But this place has been quietly doing its thing on Mobile Bay since 1847, and wow, does it show in all the right ways. The moment you drive down Grand Boulevard (which is literally just this one gorgeous tree-lined approach), you get hit with that “oh, this is actually something special” feeling. The white-columned facade stretches forever, and there’s this gracious Southern elegance that feels completely authentic – none of that fake plantation house nonsense you sometimes see.
What really gets me about this place is how it manages to feel both grand and genuinely welcoming. The lobby has these massive windows overlooking the bay, and you know what? They actually open them sometimes, which means you get real Gulf Coast breezes mixing with the air conditioning. The staff – and I’m talking everyone from the valets to the restaurant servers – seem to actually live in the area and know their stuff. When I asked about kayaking, the concierge didn’t just hand me a brochure; she told me exactly which coves stay calm in the afternoon and where to watch for dolphins (spoiler: they’re everywhere around sunset). The rooms vary quite a bit depending on which building you’re in – the main hotel has that classic feel with updated bathrooms that actually work well, while the newer sections are more modern but honestly, I’d go for the bay view in the original building every time. The golf course is legitimately challenging without being punishing, and here’s something nobody mentions: the spa is tucked away in this quiet corner where you can actually hear the water lapping against the shore during treatments.
The food situation is better than it has any right to be for a resort restaurant – their Gulf seafood is obviously fresh (they’re literally on the water), but even the steaks are solid, and breakfast on the veranda is sort of magical if you can snag a table before 8 AM. Point Clear itself is tiny, so you’re not exactly walking to a bunch of restaurants, but that’s kind of the point. This is the type of place where you settle in for a few days and just… exhale. Fair warning though: summers are absolutely sweltering and the mosquitoes are no joke, so spring and fall are your sweet spots. Also, parking is free and easy, which feels almost weird for a resort this nice. The 9.4 rating makes total sense once you’re there – it’s not trying to be the flashiest place on the Gulf, but everything just works really well, and there’s something about sitting on that huge porch watching the sun set over Mobile Bay that makes you understand why people have been coming here for over 150 years.
