HOTEL OVERVIEW
You know what? The Grand Traverse Resort really surprised me. I mean, when you first pull up to this sprawling complex on Grand Traverse Village Boulevard, it’s honestly a bit overwhelming – the place is massive, almost like a small village itself (hence the name, I guess). But once you get past that initial “where the heck do I park” moment, you start to appreciate what they’ve built here on the shores of East Grand Traverse Bay.
The resort sits on this gorgeous stretch of coastline about ten minutes from downtown Traverse City, which actually works in your favor. You’re close enough to hit up Front Street for dinner or catch the Cherry Festival craziness in July, but far enough out that you get those peaceful water views without the tourist crowds. The rooms – well, they’re solid four-star quality, though honestly some feel a bit dated depending on which tower you end up in. Ask for something facing the bay if you can swing it, because watching the sunrise over the water with your morning coffee is pretty spectacular. The spa is where this place really shines though. I’m usually skeptical about hotel spas, but their treatments actually live up to the hype, and the facilities feel properly luxurious without being pretentious about it.
What I really appreciate is how they’ve embraced the whole Michigan thing without going overboard. The golf courses are legitimately beautiful – carved right into the rolling hills with glimpses of Grand Traverse Bay between the trees. Even if you’re not a golfer, it’s worth walking around just for the views. The restaurants lean into local ingredients (hello, Michigan cherries and Great Lakes fish), and while the fine dining spot can feel a bit stuffy, the casual places nail that Up North vibe perfectly. Fair warning though – this place gets absolutely packed during peak summer and fall color season, so if you’re looking for that peaceful retreat experience, maybe aim for late spring or early fall. The 7.9 rating feels about right to me. It’s not quite luxury tier, but it’s definitely a cut above your typical resort, especially if you’re the type who wants everything in one place without having to venture into town every night.
