Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of resorts in Maui, and the Grand Wailea is honestly one of those places that hits different – in both good ways and some you should know about going in. First thing you notice pulling up that long drive off Wailea Alanui is just how massive this place is. I mean, it sprawls across 40 acres, and you’ll definitely get your steps in walking from the lobby to some of the rooms. The valet parking is smooth though, which matters because finding a spot yourself in Wailea can be a nightmare, especially during whale season when everyone’s here.
What actually sets this place apart is the water complex – and I’m not talking about some basic hotel pool. They’ve got this ridiculous river pool that winds through the property with caves and waterfalls, plus the Hibiscus Pool has this swim-up bar where you can grab a mai tai without getting out of the water. The kids go absolutely crazy for the rope swing, but honestly, I found myself there at sunset with a drink more than once. The spa is legitimately world-class too – they do this traditional Hawaiian lomilomi massage that’ll ruin you for regular hotel spa treatments forever. Just book ahead because locals actually come here for treatments, so it fills up fast.
Now, here’s the thing about the Grand Wailea that some people don’t realize – it’s big, which means it can feel a bit resort-y and crowded, especially around the main pools during peak hours. If you’re looking for that intimate boutique vibe, this isn’t it. But if you want to feel like you’re at a destination where you could spend days without leaving the property, it delivers. The restaurants are actually solid – Humuhumunukunukuapua’a (yeah, try saying that three times) sits over a lagoon with tropical fish swimming underneath your table, which sounds gimmicky but is genuinely cool. The breakfast buffet at Grand Dining Room gets busy around 9 AM, so either go early or just embrace the chaos. You’re also perfectly positioned here – Wailea Beach is right there (one of the best on the island, honestly), and you’re close enough to drive down to Makena Beach or up to the shops at Wailea without it being a whole production. The front desk staff actually knows the area well and can point you toward the less touristy spots if you ask. Sure, you’re paying Waldorf Astoria prices, but the experience feels worth it, especially if you’re celebrating something special or just want to be pampered for a few days.
