You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to the GReaT Trails Riverview – honestly, the name sounds a bit corporate, doesn’t it? But then you actually see the place sitting right there on the Vennar Bank, and it hits you different. The hotel literally overlooks the river, which is something you don’t fully appreciate until you’re having your morning coffee and watching the local fishermen cast their nets just as the sun’s coming up. The whole Palli Agraharam area is surprisingly peaceful for being so close to Thanjavur’s main attractions – I mean, you’re maybe ten minutes from the Big Temple, but you’d never know it from how quiet things get here in the evenings.

The thing about this place is that it actually feels like a proper 5-star without being stuffy about it. Check-in was smooth (they had my room ready even though I arrived around noon), and the staff – well, they know the area inside and out. The front desk guy told me exactly which auto-rickshaw drivers to trust and which ones would try to take me on the “scenic route” to Brihadeeswara Temple, if you know what I mean. The rooms are spacious, and here’s something that matters if you’re traveling in Tamil Nadu’s heat – the AC works brilliantly and doesn’t sound like a helicopter landing on your roof. I stayed in one of the river-facing rooms, and honestly, that view of the Vennar with the palmyra palms along the bank is worth the extra cost. You can actually hear the water flowing at night, which beats the usual traffic noise you get at most city hotels.

What really sold me on this place was how it handles the practical stuff without making a big deal about it. Parking’s easy – they’ve got a proper lot, not some cramped side-street situation. The restaurant serves decent South Indian breakfast (the pongal was legit), and they don’t bat an eye if you want to eat dinner late, which happens a lot when you’re out exploring Thanjavur’s temples all day. The pool area’s clean and gets good afternoon sun, though it can get a bit busy with families on weekends. I also appreciated that they keep the lobby at a reasonable temperature – not arctic cold like some hotels that seem to think freezing guests equals luxury. The 8.4 rating makes sense to me; it’s not perfect (the WiFi gets spotty on the upper floors, and room service can be slow during dinner rush), but it does what a good hotel should do – makes you feel settled so you can actually enjoy exploring the city instead of worrying about where you’re staying.
