Honestly, when I first pulled up to Greenlane Manor Motel on Great South Road, I wasn’t expecting much – I mean, it’s a motel, right? But this place actually surprised me in all the right ways. The building has this sort of understated charm that doesn’t scream for attention, which I appreciated after dealing with some of the flashier (and noisier) spots around central Auckland. You know what struck me first? How quiet it was, even though you’re literally on one of the main arterial roads heading south out of the city.

The location is honestly pretty clever when you think about it. You’re in Greenlane, which means you can walk to the Greenlane shops for decent coffee and groceries without needing to venture into the chaos of Queen Street. Plus – and this is something I only figured out after staying a few nights – you’re actually really close to Cornwall Park and One Tree Hill, which makes for fantastic morning walks if you’re into that sort of thing. The bus connections are solid too; the Great South Road buses run frequently, so getting into the CBD or out to the airport isn’t the ordeal it could be from some other areas. Parking was straightforward, which, let’s be honest, is half the battle in Auckland these days.

What really won me over was the attention to detail that you don’t usually get at this price point. The rooms feel properly maintained – not just surface-level clean, but actually cared for. The beds are comfortable (I’m particular about mattresses), and the bathrooms have that satisfying water pressure that makes you want to linger in the shower. There’s this nice balance between modern updates and not trying too hard to be trendy. The staff at check-in were genuinely helpful too, not just going through the motions – they actually knew the neighborhood and could point you toward the good Thai place down the road or explain which route to take to avoid traffic during rush hour. I stayed during a particularly busy weekend when there was some big event at Eden Park, and even then, the place maintained this calm, residential feel that made it easy to actually relax. For a 4-star spot with a 9.3 rating, it delivers exactly what it promises without any of the pretentious nonsense you sometimes get at pricier hotels.
