Hakodate Kokusai Hotel Overview
So I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to the Hakodate Kokusai Hotel on Otemachi street, I wasn’t expecting much. I mean, it’s this somewhat boxy building tucked between other commercial spots, and from the outside it just looks… well, like a standard business hotel. But you know what? Sometimes the best places surprise you.
The thing about this hotel is its location is actually pretty brilliant, though not in an obvious touristy way. You’re literally a five-minute walk from Goryokaku Park (which, if you haven’t seen those cherry blossoms in spring, you’re missing out), and honestly, being on Otemachi puts you right in the thick of things without the chaos of the main tourist strips. I could walk to decent restaurants – there’s this little ramen place around the corner that locals actually go to, not just tourists – and the morning fish market is close enough that you can smell it on the right wind. The front desk staff actually knew about these spots too, which was refreshing. No generic “there’s a convenience store nearby” nonsense.
The rooms themselves are… look, they’re not going to win any design awards, but they’re solid. Clean, quiet enough (though you might hear some street noise if you’re facing Otemachi directly), and the beds are surprisingly comfortable. The bathroom situation is what you’d expect from a Japanese hotel – compact but efficient, with one of those electronic toilet seats that makes you question why the rest of the world hasn’t figured this out yet. What really got me was the view from the upper floors – you can actually see Hakodate Bay on a clear day, and during winter, watching the snow fall over the city lights is sort of magical. The heating works well too, which matters more than you’d think when you’re dealing with Hokkaido winters.
Breakfast is served in this slightly dated dining room that feels like it hasn’t changed since the 90s, but honestly? The food makes up for the décor. They do this mix of Western and Japanese options, and their seafood – well, you’re in Hakodate, so of course it’s fresh. The coffee’s decent too, which is saying something. Check-in was smooth, parking is available if you’re driving (though the spots are typically narrow), and the whole place just runs efficiently without being stuffy about it. I’d definitely stay here again, especially since the 8.3 rating actually feels accurate – it’s not trying to be luxury, it’s just trying to be good at what it does, and it succeeds.

The main tower has lovely rooms. Fortunately, I was moved after issues with the room I was originally allocated. The room had a bigger than average bathroom for Japan with a nice big bath. Lovely views.
