Hakone Hisui Overview
You know what struck me first about Hakone Hisui? It’s tucked away in Sengokubara – and I mean really tucked away – where most tourists never venture because they’re all clustling around Lake Ashi or the ropeway stations. This is actually one of the quieter pockets of Hakone, surrounded by pampas grass fields that turn this incredible golden color in autumn (though honestly, they’re pretty stunning year-round).
The ryokan itself feels like someone’s extremely wealthy and tasteful uncle decided to open his mountain retreat to guests. Everything here whispers rather than shouts – the staff moves around with that particular Japanese efficiency that somehow never feels rushed, and the whole place has this sense of… well, I guess refined calm is the best way to put it. The rooms are what you’d expect from a five-star place, but what I didn’t expect was how quiet it gets at night. Like, properly quiet – no traffic sounds filtering up from Route 138, just the occasional rustle of wind through the trees. The onsen here is the real draw though. They’ve got both indoor and outdoor baths, and the outdoor one – honestly, soaking there while looking out at the Hakone mountains with that slightly sulfurous smell in the air that reminds you you’re in proper hot spring country – it’s worth the splurge alone.
What I really appreciated was the location’s practicality. You’re about a fifteen-minute drive from Gora (where the funicular starts), but far enough out that you escape the day-tripper crowds completely. The hotel provides shuttle service to Gora Station, which is clutch because parking around the main tourist spots can be a nightmare, especially during cherry blossom season or the autumn color rush. The kaiseki dinners here are exceptional – they source a lot of ingredients locally, and you can actually taste the difference in the mountain vegetables. I mean, I’m usually skeptical when places go on about their “local sourcing,” but this felt genuine. The presentation is Instagram-worthy if that’s your thing, but more importantly, it just tastes incredible. Service can feel a bit formal if you’re used to more casual places, but that’s pretty standard for this level of ryokan – it’s respectful rather than stuffy, if that makes sense. The 8.0 rating seems about right to me; it’s genuinely excellent without being absolutely perfect. Maybe the rooms could use slightly better lighting for reading, and the shuttle schedule could be a bit more frequent, but these are minor quibbles with what’s ultimately a really special place to experience traditional Japanese hospitality in one of the country’s most beautiful regions.
Guest Reviews
the room and the bathroom was spacious
What could be improved: The price is on the high side but lacking uniqueness that distinguish itself from other hotels within the Hakone area
What could be improved:
What could be improved:

What could be improved:
