Hakone Retreat Före Overview

You know what struck me first about Hakone Retreat Före? The name actually makes sense once you’re there – it really does feel like you’re “before” everything else, tucked away in Sengokuhara where the tourist buses don’t quite reach. I mean, you’re still in Hakone, but this part feels more like where locals might actually choose to stay if they had visitors coming to town.

The location is honestly pretty clever. Most people stick to the main Hakone loop around Lake Ashi, but Sengokuhara sits up in this sort of highland plateau area that’s got a completely different vibe – more grasslands and art museums than hot spring resorts everywhere you look. You’re actually closer to some of the better hiking trails this way, and the Pola Museum of Art is practically around the corner (well, a short drive anyway). The 8.7 rating makes sense when you realize you’re getting that four-star experience without the four-star crowds that pack into Hakone-Yumoto.

What I really appreciated was how they’ve managed to feel authentically Japanese without going overboard with the whole ryokan theater – you know what I mean, where everything’s so perfectly traditional it feels like a museum. The rooms have that clean, minimalist thing going on, but there’s actual comfort built in. The onsen situation is solid too, though honestly, half the appeal is just soaking while looking out at those Sengokuhara fields. It gets pretty quiet up there in the evenings, which is either perfect or potentially too quiet depending on what you’re after. The staff seemed genuinely helpful rather than just polite – they actually knew things about the area beyond the standard tourist script.

One thing worth mentioning is that you’ll probably want a car or at least be comfortable with the local bus system, because while it’s not isolated exactly, you’re not walking to dinner spots like you might elsewhere in Hakone. But that’s sort of the point, I think. This feels like the place you choose when you want to actually relax in Hakone rather than just check it off your list. The whole Sengokuhara area has this almost pastoral quality that’s pretty rare to find this close to Tokyo – it’s like someone took the best parts of mountain resort life and left out most of the hassle.

Food was excellent and well-presented. Staff were very friendly and accommodating. The room was interesting, quasi-industrial (so it may not appeal to everyone) but very comfortable.

What could be improved: Food was hard to find. Also, they don’t drop you off anymore on the nearby bus stations once you check out. They will drop off you kinda nearby it so you have to walk a bit more with your luggages, so you might just opt for a taxi at that point if you have large luggages since it’s a downhill path. Just doesn’t make sense to not offer the same service just cause you checked out now lol

What could be improved: It would help a lot to feel more welcome if all the staff have a decent basic English.
