Hakone Retreat villa 1/f Overview
Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of places in Hakone, but this villa actually made me want to cancel my other plans and just… stay put. You know that feeling when you walk into a place and immediately think “okay, this is it”? That’s exactly what happened here. The Hakone Retreat villa sits right in Sengokuhara, which honestly is the sweet spot of the whole area – you’re close enough to everything but far enough from the tourist crowds that descend on Lake Ashi.
What really got me was how they managed to make a 5-star place feel like you’re staying at a sophisticated friend’s house rather than some sterile luxury hotel. The villa itself is perfectly positioned to catch those morning views of the surrounding mountains (I mean, if you’re an early riser – which I’m usually not, but this place had me up at sunrise with coffee in hand). The design is this beautiful blend of traditional Japanese elements with modern comfort that doesn’t feel forced or touristy. And the space – honestly, after cramming into tiny Tokyo hotel rooms, having actual room to breathe felt like a luxury in itself. The attention to detail is what separates this from other places I’ve stayed; there’s this subtle attention to how the light moves through the rooms throughout the day, and the way they’ve positioned everything to take advantage of those forest views.
What I really appreciated – and this might sound minor but trust me, it matters – is how quiet it actually gets at night. You’re surrounded by nature but you don’t have to deal with the chaos of the more popular hot spring areas. The parking situation is straightforward (which, if you’ve ever tried to navigate Hakone by car, you’ll understand why this is worth mentioning), and the whole check-in process was refreshingly personal. The location puts you within easy reach of the Hakone Open-Air Museum and those famous hot springs, but you can also just wander the Sengokuhara area, which has this almost mystical quality especially in the early morning or late afternoon. I ended up spending way more time just relaxing at the villa than I’d planned, which for someone who usually tries to pack every minute with sightseeing, says something. The 9.4 rating makes complete sense once you’re there – it’s not just about the amenities or the view, it’s about how the whole experience comes together to create something that feels both indulgent and genuinely restorative.

What could be improved: It is a little far from the main tourist attractions.
Everything was oh so perfect. From the moment we arrived, to the 5 minutes we were late in our checkout (11:05), we felt so welcome and at home. The only thing I can tell you is this: Plan your day well, and don't be like us, arriving at 16:30~...

What could be improved: Food quality need improvement. I personally think the dinner is not worth.
Loved the intimate and quiet surroundings.
Natural setting of the villa. Very good Western and Japanese restaurants.
What could be improved: There is no proper reception and the guard house is not manned at all times. Not easy to get around during night time.
After running the Tokyo Marathon, I couldn’t have chosen a better place to recover than Hakone Retreat Villa 1/F. From the moment I arrived, I felt like I had stepped into a secluded sanctuary. My villa was stunning—spacious, beautifully designed,...
We stayed in one of the older rooms, because we loved the look, and they did not disappoint! Having the fireplace in the room, and the incredible onsen on the deck, made for an amazing experience we didn't want to leave. The Japanese breakfasts were...
