HOTEL OVERVIEW

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Hakone Suishoen – I mean, there are so many hot spring hotels in this area that you start thinking they’re all going to blur together. But this place actually sits in this perfect spot in Kowakidani where you can hear the Hayakawa River bubbling away below, and the whole property feels like it’s been carved into the mountainside rather than just plopped on top of it.

The thing that gets you right away is how they’ve managed to keep that traditional ryokan feel without making you feel like you’re sleeping in a museum. The tatami floors have that clean, grassy smell that good places maintain, and the staff – well, they actually remember your name after one conversation, which is sort of rare these days. You know what really impressed me though? The onsen here uses water from three different natural springs, and you can honestly taste the difference between them. The outdoor bath overlooking the valley is where you’ll want to spend your evening, especially in autumn when the maple trees are doing their thing. Fair warning – it gets pretty crowded around sunset, so I’d recommend going either early morning or after dinner when most people are eating.

The rooms themselves are spacious enough that you’re not bumping into each other every time someone opens a suitcase, and they’ve got this nice mix of traditional elements with modern touches that actually work. The kaiseki dinners are legitimately excellent – not just Instagram-pretty but actually delicious, with ingredients they’re clearly sourcing locally. I mean, the river fish was caught that morning, and you can tell. The only minor gripe I have is that the parking can be a bit tight during peak season (basically any weekend from March through November), and check-in sometimes takes longer than you’d expect because they really walk you through everything. But honestly, given how smoothly everything else runs, I’m not complaining too much. If you’re staying here, you’re about a ten-minute walk from Kowakidani Station, which makes day trips around Hakone pretty straightforward, and there’s this little path behind the hotel that connects to some hiking trails most tourists never find.

Food was amazing, beds were very comfortable and room was very spacious. Staff were incredible, accommodating and helpful. We really enjoyed our stay.

What could be improved: Only negative I have to say is the shower in the room could be a bit cleaner.

What could be improved: Their phone number does not work, so you will have to get creative. We got lucky and managed to get a ride from a cab that worked for a different hotel, by asking the driver for help.

- the rooms were marvelous, with everything we needed for comfort, we loved the Japanese-style sitting area in our room with the leg warmer.
- we got the softest most comfortable and beautiful Yukata for our stay.
- each breakfast and dinner was a culinary experience that made all our senses cry in joy - visual, the taste palettes, the smells, textures and the mood.
- Private onsen in the room is such an elevated experience, it was incredible
- the staff are excellent, they truly made us feel special
- the garden in the territory is beautiful

We felt pampered, rested and truly happy - in fact, we didn’t feel this happy for a very long time.

What could be improved: We loved absolutely everything

What a beautiful ryokan! Staff met us at our taxi in the driveway, brought us to a table to have tea while they took down our passport info. A gentleman that my daughter said was named Bae, brought us to our comfort twin maisonette and showed us all the amenities, how to use the onsen, etc. He was so lovely. We used the onsen overlooking the trees, maple leaves turning orange. Then to our kaiseki dinner in our yukatas. Dinner was gorgeous, and fun to try so many things we'd never even conceived of. Our server Riko was sweet, funny, and helpful. My wife had the wine and saki pairing and enjoyed that. Slept well and enjoyed a morning onsen. Then off to breakfast, which was also delicious. We wished we had done two nights! Maybe next trip to Japan...

Our stay at Hakone Suishoen was an unforgettable experience of luxury and relaxation. The in-room couple’s massage and private onsen were absolutely divine, offering ultimate comfort and tranquility. The staff’s impeccable service rivaled even the best 6-star hotel butler experiences—attentive, warm, and professional in every way.

The culinary delights were remarkable, particularly the 3-course breakfast, which was a perfect start to each day. Visiting the nearby Hakone Open Air Museum was another highlight, adding a cultural touch to an already magical stay.

Hakone Suishoen exceeded our expectations for pampering and indulgence, and we can’t wait to return for another stay in paradise. Highly recommended!

What could be improved: that we had to leave!!

The food, the setting, the service, everything

What could be improved: Somewhat of a hassle to connect with transport to get a ride from the train station to the resort. Especially since our connections via IPhone in a foreign country were insufficient to get good wireless connections at the train station

Beautiful property, amazing dinner. Staff made you feel special.

What could be improved: Only one washroom downstairs in suite.
