Hapuku Lodge & Tree Houses Overview
Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first pulled up to Hapuku Lodge – I mean, tree houses? In New Zealand? But the moment you turn off State Highway 1 onto Station Road, you realize this isn’t some gimmicky tourist trap. The setting is absolutely stunning, perched between the Kaikoura Ranges and the Pacific Ocean, and those tree houses are actually sophisticated elevated suites that feel more like luxury cabins suspended in the canopy.
The main lodge itself has this wonderful lived-in elegance – think contemporary New Zealand design with floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the mountain views perfectly. What really got me though was how thoughtfully everything’s been done. The staff actually knows the area (like, really knows it), and they’ll tell you the best times to spot whales from the coast or which local wine pairs with the Canterbury lamb they serve in their restaurant. The tree houses are where you want to stay if you can swing it – they’re connected by elevated walkways, and falling asleep to the sound of native birds is something else entirely. Each one’s slightly different too, so if you’re particular about views (mountain versus ocean glimpses), mention it when you book.
You know what surprised me most? How quiet it gets at night, even though you’re only about 20 minutes north of Kaikoura township. The parking’s easy – no cramped city lots here – and check-in was refreshingly relaxed, none of that stuffy hotel formality. The location’s actually perfect for exploring the area without dealing with Kaikoura’s tourist crowds, plus you’re right there for early morning whale watching trips or walks along the Hapuku River. I’ll be honest, it’s not cheap, but when you’re paying for a 5-star place with a 9.6 rating, you expect excellence – and this delivers. The whole experience feels authentically Kiwi rather than trying too hard to impress, which somehow makes it even more impressive, if that makes sense.

Wonderful staff. Relaxed excellent service exceeded expectations & the food was the best we have enjoyed in New Zealand. Beautiful location between snow capped mountains and the sea.

The rural, peaceful and beautiful setting. Incredible changing views of the landscape. The flavors produced in the kitchen for breakfast and especially dinner were outstanding. Great staff!
