Hilton Okinawa Miyako Island Resort

HOTEL OVERVIEW

Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first pulled up to the Hilton on Miyako Island – the approach is pretty unassuming, just winding through some residential streets in Hirara before you suddenly see this sprawling resort complex. But you know what hit me first? The silence. I mean, coming from mainland Japan, the absence of traffic noise and city buzz is almost jarring in the best possible way.

The property itself sits right on this gorgeous stretch of beach, and here’s something the photos don’t really capture – the sand actually squeaks when you walk on it. It’s that fine, powdery stuff that Miyako is famous for, though locals will tell you the best beaches are still further out on the island (they’re not wrong, but this one’s pretty damn good for not having to drive anywhere). The rooms are solid Hilton standard, nothing groundbreaking but clean and comfortable, with those floor-to-ceiling windows that make you feel like you’re floating above the ocean. Pro tip: try to snag one of the higher floors facing southeast – you’ll catch both sunrise and the best view of the reef shelf that extends way out into the crystal-clear water.

What really won me over, though, was how the staff handles the pace of island life. Check-in was refreshingly unhurried – they actually seem to get that you’re here to decompress, not rush through some scripted welcome routine. The concierge folks genuinely know their stuff about the island too, like where to find the best soki soba in Hirara (about a ten-minute walk toward the port area) or which diving spots are worth the trip versus the tourist traps. The pool area gets pretty busy during Golden Week and summer holidays – I’d hit it early morning or late afternoon if you want some peace. Food-wise, the breakfast buffet leans heavily into local ingredients, and their take on Okinawan purple sweet potato anything is worth trying, even if you think you don’t like sweet potato. The resort shuttle runs pretty regularly to central Hirara, which is clutch since taxis aren’t exactly abundant here, though honestly, renting a car is your best bet for exploring the island properly. One small gripe – the Wi-Fi can be spotty in some parts of the property, especially near the beach areas, but maybe that’s not such a bad thing when you’re trying to disconnect. At 8.3 rating, it delivers exactly what it promises: a solid, comfortable base for exploring one of Japan’s most underrated islands, with enough polish to feel special but not so much that you forget you’re in this beautifully remote corner of Okinawa.

Everything! The entire hotel staff, room, pool, buffet breakfast and other amenities were excellent. Nagisa (Chrissy) especially! She greeted us when we arrived with a great smile and a super friendly demeanor. We then spent a good amount of time talking with her about the hotel, places to eat and things we could do around the area. Her professional manner and thoughtfulness made our stay even more enjoyable!

What could be improved: Nothing.

Amazing staff and service. Nice spacious clean rooms. Lots of extra’s like the shuttle bus, bike rental and more.

What could be improved: The location is nice; a beach nearby, pools, lots of plants. The location is not nice; big construction nearby and far away from all the sights.

Loved the pools and breakfast buffet was good. They even put the effort in to change up the breakfast menu slightly every day so it doesn’t get boring.

Staff was very lovely and helpful.

What could be improved: Had to sign up for the Hilton honors club to get internet. Most hotels offer free wifi with their stay. The Hilton honors membership doesn’t cost anything monetary but it meant we had to provide personal info. Not ideal.

We also did the poolside BBQ which was nice food but very expensive for what it was. 15000 yen per person - so about 150 AUD per person for dinner and “free-flowing” drinks. - Moral of the story: always check the price and inclusions before signing up for things.

The pools and close proximity to the beach!

What could be improved: No shops to pick up essentials or souvenirs.

Breakfast was good and the hotel is very nice & new. Great service by all the staff

What could be improved: Was disappointed we didn't get to go up to the roof lounge as they thought typhoon was coming, so we were disappointed. That was the very reason why we booked the hotel

friendly and good service

What could be improved: 1. if it could offer bottle water inside the room would be better

2. we have 2 persons, but when we entered, we only have one tooth kit.

3. the washlet do not have heat functions

the hotel is nice

What could be improved: - limited selection of food: we stayed there for 6 nights and the buffet was always the same, both for dinner and breakfast.
- the location of the hotel is far away from everything (15 minutes Walk to the closest kombini, 30 minutes to city center).
- a lot of services are not included (e.g. the umbrella and sunbeds at the beach are not included).
- communication in English is a bit hard sometimes.
- next to the hotel there's a construction site, they're probably building another hotel. The sight and noise is not pleasant.
- I stayed in other Hilton in the past, and the provided services is not Hilton level. During my trip in Japan I stayed in other places where I payed the exact same amount per night, and I received an incredibly superior level of service. This is just not worth the price, there are other options

Clean!!!

What could be improved: Everything was great - only hiccup was when we asked gor take away of our food, they said no and said they have to throw it away.
