Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to the Hilton Santa Fe Buffalo Thunder, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. It’s actually about 15 minutes north of Santa Fe proper, sitting on Pojoaque Pueblo land, which gives it this interesting cultural dimension you don’t get at your typical chain hotel. The building itself is massive and sort of imposing in that Southwestern adobe style, but once you’re inside, it actually feels pretty welcoming.

What really struck me was how they’ve managed to blend the Hilton reliability with genuine local character. The lobby has these beautiful Native American art pieces – and I mean actual artwork, not the cheesy touristy stuff you sometimes see. You know what’s nice? The casino is completely separate from the hotel areas, so if gambling isn’t your thing (like me), you barely notice it’s there. The rooms are solid – nothing revolutionary, but the beds are comfortable and the views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains are honestly spectacular, especially at sunset when everything turns this incredible pink-orange color. Fair warning though: if you’re expecting to walk to Santa Fe’s Plaza for dinner, you’ll need a car. But that drive into town takes you right past some gorgeous high desert scenery, and honestly, the location means you’re perfectly positioned for day trips to places like Bandelier or Los Alamos.

The pool area is where this place really shines, especially in summer. It’s got this resort feel without being overly fancy – perfect for families but not so kid-focused that adults feel out of place. The spa is actually run in partnership with the pueblo, and they incorporate traditional healing practices that feel authentic rather than appropriated. I mean, the 7.9 rating makes sense to me – it’s not perfect (the restaurant can be hit or miss, and Wi-Fi in some rooms is spotty), but there’s something genuinely special about staying on pueblo land and experiencing that cultural connection. Plus, the staff really knows the area – they’ll point you toward hiking trails and local spots that aren’t in the guidebooks. If you’re looking for that typical Santa Fe adobe-and-turquoise experience right in the historic district, this might not be your place. But if you want something that feels more connected to the actual landscape and culture of northern New Mexico, with all the Hilton amenities you’d expect, Buffalo Thunder delivers in a way that surprised me.
