The thing about Cortland is that it’s perfectly positioned between Syracuse and Binghamton, so you’re getting that upstate New York feel without being stuck in the middle of nowhere. I mean, you can hit up the local Wegmans for snacks (because let’s be real, resort food gets expensive), and there’s decent pizza places within a few minutes if you need a break from hotel dining. The rooms themselves are solid – nothing fancy, but they’re clean and the beds are comfortable enough that you’ll actually sleep well despite the excitement echoing from the waterpark until about 9 PM. Pro tip: if you’re sensitive to noise, ask for a room on the side away from the pool area, though honestly the sound insulation is better than I expected for a place that’s essentially built around a giant indoor splash zone.
What really won me over was how they handle the logistics that usually make family trips stressful. The parking is actually ample (rare for these kinds of places), check-in was quick even during what seemed like a busy weekend, and they provide those plastic wristbands that let you move freely between the hotel and waterpark without constantly fishing for room keys. The waterpark itself stays pretty comfortable temperature-wise year-round, which is clutch when you’re dealing with upstate winters. Sure, it’s not the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas, but for a solid 4-star spot in central New York, it delivers on what it promises. The 7.9 rating feels about right – it’s genuinely good at what it does, just don’t expect luxury spa vibes. This is a place where kids will remember the vacation fondly and parents won’t feel like they need another vacation to recover from it.

It’s a beautiful hotel. It’s starting to show its age though. The pullout bed was uncomfortable, the kitchen had dirty dishes and food left from previous guests, and the furnishings were mismatched.

We ate at Carver’s Steakhouse inside the restaurant and while the food was excellent, the service was very slow. We ordered an appetizer that hadn’t arrived after 45 minutes - our waitress was friendly but I think she was one or two working. I’m not sure where the short-staffed area of the restaurant was but many tables around us were also waiting...
