The staff genuinely seems to know the area too, which I appreciate – they’ll tell you when the afternoon light is best for volcano photos, or which local tour operators actually know what they’re doing for the lake excursions.

What really sells me on this place though is the attention to details that matter when you’re traveling. The rooms are comfortable without being flashy – good beds, reliable hot water (crucial after a day hiking in the rain), and windows that actually open so you can hear the lake at night. Parking’s included, which saves you the headache of figuring out street parking in town. The breakfast is solid – nothing revolutionary, but they do this thing with local kuchen that’s worth getting up for. I’ve been there during both summer and the shoulder seasons, and while July can get pretty busy with Chilean families on vacation, the hotel never feels chaotic. The 8.5 rating makes sense to me – it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in the Lakes District, but it delivers on what you actually need: a comfortable base for exploring the area, views that remind you why you came to this part of Chile in the first place, and that feeling that someone’s actually paying attention to your experience. If you’re planning to use Puerto Varas as a jumping-off point for Chiloé or the national parks, or just want to spend a few days soaking in the lake scenery without the touristy intensity of Pucón, this place hits the sweet spot.
