You know what? Hotel del Coronado is one of those places that actually lives up to the hype – and I say that as someone who’s usually pretty skeptical about historic hotels that lean hard into their Victorian charm. The moment you pull up to this massive red-roofed beauty, you get why people have been making the trip to Coronado Island for over 130 years. It’s honestly impressive how they’ve managed to keep that grand dame feeling without everything feeling stuffy or museum-like.

The location is pretty much unbeatable if you’re looking to really experience San Diego beyond the typical downtown scene. You’re literally right on Coronado Beach – and I mean *right* on it, like you can stumble from the hotel lobby onto some of the softest sand I’ve ever felt. The beach here is way less crowded than Mission Beach or Pacific Beach, especially if you walk north toward the Navy base (don’t worry, you can’t actually get there, but it’s quieter in that direction). What I really love is how easy it is to bike around the island from here – Orange Avenue has this perfect small-town vibe with actual local shops, and you can rent bikes right at the hotel. The ferry landing is maybe a 10-minute bike ride if you want to skip the bridge traffic getting back to downtown.

Now, let’s be real about what you’re getting – this is a 4-star property with a 7.4 rating, so it’s not going to be flawless. Some of the rooms, especially in the original Victorian building, can feel a bit cramped and the AC can be… temperamental. But honestly? The charm factor makes up for a lot. I stayed in one of the tower rooms (the newer section) and while it was more predictable hotel-room-wise, waking up to that ocean view never got old. The pools are actually really well done – there’s the main one that gets busy with families during the day, but there’s also this quieter adult pool that most people seem to miss.

Here’s something I didn’t expect – the food scene is actually solid. Yeah, it’s hotel restaurant pricing, but the Sunday brunch at Crown Landing is legitimately good, not just convenient. And if you want to venture out, some of San Diego’s best Mexican food is just across the bridge in Barrio Logan, maybe 15 minutes by car. Parking at the hotel is expensive (because of course it is), but there’s street parking on some of the residential streets if you don’t mind a short walk.

The service feels genuine rather than overly polished, which I appreciate. Check-in was smooth, and the front desk staff actually knew the area well enough to give real recommendations, not just the tourist trap stuff. During the summer it gets pretty packed – I mean, you’re competing with wedding parties basically every weekend – but even in the busy season, the beach is long enough that you can find your own space. If you can swing a winter visit, it’s actually kind of magical when the crowds thin out but the weather’s still perfect.
