Hotel Green Plaza Hakone Overview
You know what caught me off guard about Hotel Green Plaza Hakone? It’s actually positioned perfectly in Sengokuhara – not right in the thick of touristy Hakone-Yumoto where everyone ends up, but tucked into this quieter valley area where you can breathe a little. I mean, when you’re dealing with Hakone’s crowds (especially during autumn leaf season, which is honestly insane), finding a spot that feels somewhat removed but isn’t a pain to get around from is pretty clutch.
The hotel itself has that sort of comfortable, lived-in feel that a lot of these established Japanese mountain hotels nail – not flashy or trying too hard to be Instagram-perfect, but genuinely welcoming in a way that makes sense after a day of hiking or hot spring hopping. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star place, though honestly the real draw here is being able to step outside and immediately feel like you’re in proper nature. Sengokuhara has this almost meadow-like quality that’s different from the more dramatic lake views you get closer to Ashi-ko, and in the morning when the mist hangs around the mountains… well, it’s the kind of thing that makes you understand why people have been coming to Hakone for centuries.
What I really appreciated – and this might sound minor but trust me on this – is how the staff actually knows the area. Not just the obvious spots everyone hits, but they’ll point you toward the quieter trails or mention when the pampas grass fields are at their peak (which, if you’re here in fall, is absolutely worth timing right). The onsen facilities are solid without being over-the-top, and there’s something to be said for soaking while looking out at actual forest instead of a parking lot. Plus, you’re close enough to Gora that getting to the cable car or the art museums isn’t a whole production, but far enough out that you’re not hearing tour buses at 7 AM. The 8.3 rating makes sense – it’s the kind of place that does what it’s supposed to do really well, without any major surprises good or bad. If you’re looking for a base in Hakone that feels more like staying in the mountains than staying in a resort town, this hits that sweet spot.
Guest Reviews
Buffet dinner and breakfast had lots of variety both Japanese and Western style. Assigning round for dinner help to reduce the traffic. Outdoor onsen is nice with Fuji view. Garden within the hotel is good for social media content!! What could be...
Dinner was marvellous, breakfast was good. The onsen was good, the smell left a bit to be desired but no fault of the hotel. What could be improved: The shower screen was not clean, Clearly they don't expect people to use the shower when you are...
Beautiful view,great staff,nice Onsen
What could be improved: A bit out of the way. Especially with ropeway closed.
The onsen with the view of Fuji in the morning was very nice! Also there is a terrace where you can enjoy views of Fuji. The food was delicious too. What could be improved: After spending several hundred euros for a room i found it quite ridiculous...
Good variety and good choice of food for both breakfast and dinner, although a little noisy when crowded. Fabulous view of Mt Fuji from viewing garden if not blocked by clouds. What could be improved: Nothing much. A little disappointed that nearby...
Great views of Fuji on a clear day. Onsen was great. What could be improved: Staff seemed disinterested in guest comfort or satisfaction. Our toilet seat didn’t fit properly and moved around with no lid. I complained to the desk and they said that...
Nice outdoor onsen.
What could be improved: Very dated facility…
The spa with the best view of mt Fuji, the quality of the buffet meal and the professional staff service. The facilities were of a high standard
What could be improved: I put on a few kilos after buffet meals
The Mt Fuji views were amazing. We enjoyed the onsen experience each day. The ropeway was easy to get to and took us to the lake and into gora, so we could explore surrounding attractions. There was a beautiful Christmas performance with a pianist,...
It had an atmosphere that was relaxing and calming. The staff at reception were the best we experienced. What could be improved: The property is dated and in need of a redo. Our room was very old with pealing paper. However, we would stay again as...
