You know what struck me first about Hotel Mae? It’s actually right where you want to be in Maitencillo – sitting pretty on Avenida del Mar, which means you’re literally a two-minute walk from the beach. I mean, you can hear the waves from some of the rooms, and honestly, that’s half the reason to stay here instead of somewhere tucked back in the hills.

The place has this sort of understated Chilean coastal vibe that works really well. It’s not trying to be some flashy resort, but it’s definitely a step up from the basic beach hostels you’ll find scattered around town. The lobby has these big windows that let in all that gorgeous Pacific light, and the staff – well, they actually seem to know the area. When I asked about the best spot for watching sunset (because let’s be real, that’s why we’re all here), the guy at the front desk didn’t just point toward the beach. He told me about this little stretch near the rocks about ten minutes south where the crowds thin out, especially on weekdays. That’s the kind of local insight you don’t get everywhere.

The rooms are comfortable without being fancy – think clean lines, decent beds, and those little touches that show someone was paying attention. The bathrooms are actually spacious, which is kind of a big deal in Chilean beach hotels where they sometimes feel like afterthoughts. What I really appreciated was the parking situation – there’s an actual lot, not just “good luck finding street parking” like some places around here. During summer months (December through February), this becomes absolutely crucial because Maitencillo gets packed with families from Santiago and Valparaíso escaping the city heat. The hotel sits at that sweet spot where you’re close enough to walk to the main restaurant strip near the plaza, but far enough from the late-night party spots that you can actually sleep. I stayed during a weekend in January and honestly expected more noise, but the rooms facing the ocean stay pretty quiet even when the town gets lively. The 8.4 rating makes sense – it’s not perfect, but it delivers on what matters most when you’re here to surf, relax, and maybe try some of that incredible seafood Maitencillo is known for. Plus, if you’re planning day trips, you’re positioned perfectly for heading north to Zapallar or south toward Viña del Mar without feeling like you’re staying in the middle of nowhere.
