HOTEL OVERVIEW

You know what caught me off guard about Hotel Monterey Edelhof Sapporo? Walking into what feels like a European castle smack in the middle of downtown Sapporo. I mean, the whole Monterey chain has this thing for themed hotels, but this one actually pulls it off without feeling like a theme park. The lobby’s got these heavy wooden beams and tapestries that somehow work perfectly against Hokkaido’s snowy backdrop outside – it’s like someone transported a Bavarian hunting lodge to Japan, and honestly, it shouldn’t work but it totally does.

The location is pretty much perfect if you’re trying to balance sightseeing with convenience. You’re literally a three-minute walk from Odori Park (which is gorgeous during Snow Festival season, though prepare for crowds), and Susukino’s neon-lit chaos is right there when you want good ramen at 11 PM. What I really appreciated was how quiet the rooms stay despite being so central – they’ve got solid windows that actually block out the street noise, which is rare in Japanese city hotels. The Austrian-style rooms are spacious by Japanese standards, and the beds are legitimately comfortable, not just “hotel comfortable.” Check-in was smooth, though the European decor theme means the elevators are a bit slower than you’d expect in a modern Japanese hotel – minor thing, but worth mentioning if you’re always in a rush.

Here’s what sets it apart from other Sapporo hotels: the staff genuinely knows the area and will point you toward spots that aren’t in every guidebook. They steered me toward this incredible soup curry place on Nishi-dori that I never would’ve found otherwise, and gave me the heads up about which subway entrance to use for Chitose Airport that saves you from dragging luggage up extra stairs. The hotel restaurant does solid European-Japanese fusion if you don’t feel like venturing out, but honestly, with all the incredible food within walking distance, I’d save your money and explore. One small critique – the WiFi can get a bit spotty during peak hours, probably because everyone’s uploading their Snow Monkey photos at the same time. But the 8.6 rating feels about right to me. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’re staying somewhere special without breaking the bank on those ultra-luxury Sapporo properties, and the European charm actually adds something unique to your Hokkaido experience rather than just being a gimmick.

This is a hotel with extensive wedding facilities. We had a room in adjacent building. Fast and not too busy elevators. Very quiet even during a wedding. The breakfast in the ballroom included both European and Japanese items and was better than in a 5* hotel in Tokyo. Spa was included and pretty good. Nice service.

Sumptuous breakfast, wide selection of foods. Fantastic location was close to all tourist attractions in the city. Highly recommended. We would definitely stay there again.

1. Location.
2. Cleanliness.
3. Staff were helpful.
4. Toiletries were great.

What could be improved: 1. Housekeeping was done on restroom only. The bedsheet was not change on daily basis and also the dustbin in the living room was not emptied either.

The property is impressive and beautiful looking. The location is fantastic and our room had a wonderful view. The beds were comfortable however we found the room too hot and struggled to get it cool, even sleeping with the window open in winter. The breakfast has so much variety and expansive views of the city. We would consider staying again but hope that they can change the rules for tattoos. Even if only offering a time that they are acceptable so to not offend other guests.

What could be improved: We were sad to not be able to use the spa due to our tattoos. We understand the cultural implications however most hotels and tourist areas were still accomodating. A tattoo hour at the start or end of the day couple be a good option for international guests.

Superb location to restaurants and Odori Park. The hotel is spotless, spacious and relaxing. The inhouse restaurant is also spacious and has an extensive breakfast selection. This review is based on a winter stay. Lastly, the pick up for drivers is very convenient and is right at the front door. Rooms are the perfect size and immaculate.

What could be improved: A small inconvenience was the laundry facilities. Due to only being space for 3 dryers and 3 washers, you could line up for an hour or more waiting for an available machine in the early evening. Also the coffee and tea in the main waiting room is locked away at 8pm.

What could be improved: Hotel does not provide breakfast for early morning check out even though hotel price that paid was included. However, I saw other groups of quests could get their breakfast box before check out. I do not know why be treated differently.

The hot spring bath and breakfast are both amazing. The staff are very welcoming and rooms are comfortable.

What could be improved: Nothing that I didn’t like. Need to take a short walk to reach the Sapporo station.
