Hotel Nikko Alivila

You know what caught me off guard about Hotel Nikko Alivila? It’s this massive resort that somehow doesn’t feel like a tourist trap, even though it absolutely should. I mean, when you first pull up to this place in Yomitan – and yeah, you’ll definitely want to rent a car because it’s about 40 minutes north of Naha – it looks like something straight out of a Spanish villa fantasy. The whole Moorish architecture thing could’ve been cheesy, but honestly, it works beautifully against those Okinawan cliffs.

The location is actually pretty brilliant once you get your bearings. You’re right on this gorgeous stretch of beach that feels way more private than the crowded spots down south, and the water here has that ridiculous turquoise color that makes your photos look filtered even when they’re not. What I really appreciated was how they’ve positioned the hotel – you get these incredible sunset views from the lobby and most of the ocean-facing rooms, but you’re also close enough to explore the real Okinawa. There’s this little local spot called Zakimi Castle ruins about ten minutes away that most tourists completely miss, and the drive through the sugar cane fields to get there is honestly half the fun.

The rooms are spacious in that Japanese way where everything has its place, and I loved the deep soaking tubs – perfect after a day of island hopping or diving. Speaking of diving, the hotel’s dive shop is legit, not just some tourist operation. The staff actually knows the local sites and can point you toward some incredible spots like the Blue Cave without the insane crowds you’ll find if you book through the big tour companies. Check-in was smooth (they speak excellent English, which isn’t always a given outside Naha), and parking is free, which sounds basic but trust me, it matters when you’re planning day trips around the island. The breakfast buffet leans heavily into local Okinawan dishes alongside the usual international options – try the goya champuru if you’re feeling adventurous, though it’s definitely an acquired taste. Only minor complaint? The wifi in some rooms can be spotty, but honestly, maybe that’s not such a bad thing when you’re looking out at views like these.
