Hotel Ofutei

720-0201 Hiroshima, Fukuyama, Tomo-cho Tomo 136, Japan
HOTEL OVERVIEW
You know what hit me first when I pulled up to Hotel Ofutei? The fact that it’s tucked right into the heart of old Tomonoura – I mean, you’re literally staying in one of those postcard-perfect fishing villages that somehow survived Japan’s modernization rush. The building itself has this understated elegance that doesn’t try too hard, which honestly feels refreshing after seeing so many over-the-top resort facades.
The thing about staying here is that you’re not just booking a room, you’re dropping yourself into this incredible slice of Hiroshima that most tourists completely miss. Tomonoura is where they filmed parts of Ponyo (yeah, the Studio Ghibli film), and walking around these narrow streets in the early morning, you’ll totally get why Miyazaki fell in love with the place. The hotel staff actually knows their local history – not just the rehearsed tourism spiel, but real stories about the old merchant families and how the town used to be this major port for waiting on tides. Check-in was smooth, parking is right there (which, trust me, matters when you’re navigating these tiny coastal roads), and the rooms have this perfect balance of traditional Japanese touches without making you feel like you’re sleeping in a museum.
What really sells this place for me is the onsen situation – the hot spring baths look straight out over the Seto Inland Sea, and if you time it right around sunset, well… let’s just say I ended up staying in that water way longer than planned. The kaiseki dinner deserves a mention too, because they’re using actual local seafood that probably got pulled from the water that same day. I mean, the sea bream here is kind of legendary in this part of Japan, and the chef clearly knows what they’re doing with it. The service has that genuine Japanese hospitality thing going on – attentive but never hovering, you know? And honestly, with an 8.9 rating, I was expecting maybe some small disappointments, but the place really delivers. Sure, it’s not ultra-modern (some of the room fixtures show their age), but that almost adds to the charm. You’re here for the atmosphere and the location, and Hotel Ofutei nails both. If you’re doing the Hiroshima area and want something completely different from the city experience, this is your spot.

Fabulous hotel with excellent sea views. It was truly a pleasure staying here.
If you could, spring for the deluxe rooms (they are in hot demand), they were well appointed, recently upgraded and truly luxurious.
What could be improved: Will need a car to get here, but it’s part of the expectations and experience so it’s not really a detractor.

The staff was exceptionally kind and welcoming, and the food was absolutely incredible. Even though we are vegetarian, they were able to accomodate us with what was probably the best meal of our trip. The view out the window was also amazing. This is one of the best hotels I've ever visited!
Rachel from Australia (1 December 2023)
Everything was just lovely. A beautiful room, with a great view of the surrounds, lovely dinner and breakfast, nice bath facilities. Its a great option in Tomonoura as it is in town rather than down the road, so everything is walkable. Shuttle service from Fukuyama station is very convenient. Staff were very helpful and their service was...

The Hotel Ofutei was a wonderful relaxing retreat after the hectic-ness of Osaka and Nagoya. The hotel is right on the water so you can hear the waves lapping at night and the seabirds during the day. There were two western chairs in our tatami room so you could look out the picture window to your hearts content. The futons on the floor provided...

The stunning view from our room. Our room was gorgeous - plenty of space, luxurious
What could be improved: Would have been nice to have a choice of restaurants

The internal architecture of the room was outstanding. My room had these cupped wood flooring that was amazing in craftsmanship. The each wall had a variety of tiling or textured wall paper, I have never seen before. The lighting and plumbing fixtures were top-of-the-line. Each wall of my corner room, had a impressive view of the ocean. The special...

The view from the room was phenomenal. We used the private onsen and again the view was breathtaking. The staff at the hotel were fantastic and always very helpful.

The staff were very helpful, and their best English speaking waitress/staff member really looked after us.
Yasuyo from United States (30 November 2023)
The view from the room. The frond desk staff was wonderful and extremely helpful. Thank you. What could be improved: We were picked up by the hotel shuttle near the Fukuyama station. We had heavy suitcases as we were traveling Japan for a month. The driver just stood there and watched us struggle carrying them up on the shuttle and didn’t even...
