Hotel Taisetsu Onsen&Canyon Resort Overview
You know what? I was honestly a bit skeptical when I first pulled up to Hotel Taisetsu Onsen&Canyon Resort – the name’s a mouthful and it sits right in the heart of Sounkyo, which can feel pretty touristy during peak season. But man, this place actually gets it right in ways that surprised me. The moment you walk into the lobby, there’s this immediate sense that you’re not just at another mountain hotel. The staff genuinely seems to care about making your stay work, and the whole vibe feels more authentic than some of the flashier resorts you’ll find scattered around Hokkaido.
What really sold me was the onsen situation here – and I mean, if you’re going to stay in Sounkyo, the hot springs better be worth it, right? The outdoor baths overlook the canyon, and honestly, soaking there while snow falls (if you’re lucky enough to visit in winter) is one of those experiences that makes you forget about whatever stress you brought from home. The water temperature is perfect, not scalding like some places that seem to think hotter equals better. I actually spent way more time in the baths than I planned because the setting is just… well, it’s pretty spectacular. The indoor facilities are solid too – clean, well-maintained, and they’ve got that slightly sulfurous smell that tells you the mineral content is legit.
The rooms are what you’d expect from a proper 4-star place, though nothing fancy – comfortable beds, decent views if you get lucky with your assignment, and thankfully, pretty good soundproofing. That last part matters because Sounkyo can get busy with tour groups, especially during autumn when everyone’s chasing those famous fall colors. Speaking of which, if you’re planning to visit during peak foliage season (usually mid to late October), book way ahead because this place fills up fast. The restaurant serves up solid regional dishes – the kaiseki dinner was actually better than I expected, with local ingredients that felt thoughtful rather than just thrown together. I mean, you’re not going to confuse it with some high-end Tokyo spot, but for a mountain resort, it hits the mark. Check-in was smooth, parking is free and ample (which honestly matters when you’re road-tripping through Hokkaido), and the location puts you within walking distance of the main canyon attractions without being right on top of the crowds. The 8.3 rating feels about right – it’s a place that does what it promises without any major surprises, good or bad.

Love the Onsen and futon + tatami
What could be improved: None. Very happy with the stay
Staff very nice, esp Thai Staff “N’ Nut” - she’s very helpful.
Onsen is OK, breakfast and dinner are average.
The lady staff who can speak Chinese is very friendly and helpful. She tries her best to ask around for refund the additional adult booking I made mistakenly. Thank you staff:-)
What could be improved: The B1 Onsen closed around 9.30am onwards:-(
Nice Onsen
What could be improved: No early check in
It was clean and comfortable. The food was great. What could be improved: In stead of using futon, they use egg crate foam for mattress at tatami room. I doubled up and layer the comforter over the egg crate foam to be comfortable. Need to get rid...

Wonderful onsen, delicious meals (we were unsure about the buffet dinner before arriving but it was really good) and comfortable rooms. The hotel is on the older side but it's very well maintained and comfortable.

The breakfast and dinner buffet was excellent. Onsen were nice. Excellent location.
What could be improved: They cater to large tour groups so at times it is crowded. Also with the high usage the facilities are not top shelf.
