HOTEL OVERVIEW

You know those hotels where you walk in and immediately think “okay, this is seriously fancy but also somehow feels right”? That’s Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto. I mean, it’s tucked into this incredible spot right in Nakagyo-ku where you’re literally surrounded by history – the old Nijo Castle area where traditional Kyoto still breathes through every alleyway. When you step inside, there’s this immediate sense of calm that honestly surprised me, considering you’re smack in the middle of one of the world’s busiest tourist cities.

The thing about this place is how they’ve managed to blend serious luxury with actual Japanese aesthetics (not the fake stuff you see sometimes). The building itself sits on what used to be Nijo-jo Castle grounds, and they’ve preserved some of the original garden elements in ways that feel authentic rather than showy. Walking through the lobby, you’ll notice these subtle design details – the way natural light filters through, the carefully chosen materials that somehow make the space feel both grand and intimate. The spa here is actually something special too, though honestly, after a day wandering around Nishiki Market and the bamboo groves, you’ll probably appreciate it more than you expect.

What really sets this place apart though is the location knowledge you get just by staying here. The concierge team – and I’m usually skeptical about these things – actually knows the neighborhood in a way that helps. They’ll point you toward the tiny soba place three blocks down that doesn’t have English signs, or tell you the best time to hit Kiyomizu-dera before the crowds descend. The rooms themselves are spacious by Kyoto standards (which matters more than you’d think), and there’s something about the way they’ve designed the windows that frames the city views perfectly. Plus, you’re close enough to walk to Gion district without dealing with the taxi chaos, but far enough from the main tourist drag that you can actually sleep at night. It’s one of those rare finds where the 9.3 rating actually makes sense – not perfect, maybe, but the kind of place that gets the important stuff right and makes you want to plan your next Kyoto trip before you’ve even checked out.

Super friendly and helpful staff, very clean, excellent service, great rooms, very good food (also for vegetarians!). Massage was off the charts, and they offered great excursions that were quite exclusive (To-ji temple private tour highly recommended)

The property at the MITSUI alone was stunning. The architecture was beautiful and the gardens were perfectly kept. We received tea and hand towels upon arrival, daily gifts were delivered to our room (face mask, chocolates, and lip balm), and we even got to see its cherry blossom tree in full bloom during our stay. The public onsen was also the perfect space for a quiet day or night at the hotel. It’s the bottom floor so you feel like you are transported to another location. We left feeling rejuvenated from the long days of exploring and the loudness of other cities we visited.

What could be improved: Breakfast felt chaotic on some days. The earlier we went, the better. After 9am, it was always busy and it felt like the staff was overwhelmed and flustered. We understood since it was cherry blossom season but it was noticeable.
