You know what really surprised me about Humblebee Retreat? It’s tucked away in Kuttampuzha – and I mean really tucked away – but somehow that’s exactly what makes it work. When you’re driving through Kothamangalam toward the retreat, you’ll pass these little roadside tea stalls and rubber plantations, and honestly, you might wonder if you took a wrong turn. But then you arrive and it all clicks. This isn’t trying to be some fancy resort (it’s technically 3-star), but the 9.0 rating makes perfect sense once you’re there for a day or two.

The thing about this part of Kerala is that it sits right on the edge of the bird sanctuary area – Thattekkad is literally one of India’s premier birdwatching spots, which most people don’t realize until they’re actually here. So yeah, you’ll wake up to sounds you’ve probably never heard before, especially if you’re a city person. The staff actually knows their birds too, which caught me off guard. During my stay, one of the guys pointed out a Malabar Grey Hornbill that was hanging around near the dining area, and he wasn’t just making stuff up – he knew exactly when they typically show up and where to look. The rooms are simple but thoughtfully done, with these wide windows that actually frame the views instead of just letting in light. I mean, the beds aren’t going to win any luxury awards, but everything’s clean and the AC works properly (crucial in Kerala’s humidity). What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night – no traffic noise, no honking, just insects and the occasional rustle of something moving through the trees.

Parking’s easy, check-in was straightforward, and the food… well, it’s proper Kerala home-style cooking, not restaurant food trying to be homestyle. The fish curry they served had that slightly sour tang from kokum that you only get when someone actually knows what they’re doing. If you’re vegetarian, don’t worry – they do an excellent avial and their sambar has this depth of flavor that suggests they’re roasting and grinding their own spice blends. The timing here matters though – this area gets busy during peak birding season (roughly October through March), so if you want that peaceful, almost-alone-in-the-forest feeling, consider visiting during the shoulder months. Just be prepared for the monsoon if you come too early or late. Honestly, for what you pay and what you get – especially that combination of actual nature access and genuine local hospitality – it’s the kind of place that reminds you why you started traveling in the first place.
