Hyakunagaran Overview

You know what hit me first about Hyakunagaran? The silence. I mean, you’re tucked away in this corner of Nanjo that most tourists never see – down in Tamagusuku where the roads get narrow and wind through actual neighborhoods instead of resort strips. It’s maybe twenty minutes from Naha airport, but honestly feels like you’ve escaped to a completely different island. The property sits on this elevated spot where you can actually see the coastline stretching out, and there’s something almost meditative about how removed it feels from the usual Okinawa tourist circuit.

The thing about this place – and I stayed here twice now, once in spring and again last fall – is that it’s clearly designed by someone who gets what luxury actually means when you’re trying to decompress. The rooms are spacious in that Japanese way where every inch serves a purpose, but nothing feels cramped or overthought. I particularly loved how they handle the bathroom situation; there’s this deep soaking tub that faces out toward the grounds, and you can actually relax without feeling like you’re on display. The staff seems to anticipate what you need before you ask, which can feel a bit intense at first if you’re used to more casual places, but honestly? After a day or two you start appreciating how seamlessly everything just works.

What really sets Hyakunagaran apart – and this might sound small but it matters – is how they’ve managed to create this bubble of calm without making you feel cut off from Okinawa itself. You’re close enough to drive to the Sefa-utaki sacred site in about ten minutes, and there’s this little local market in Tamagusuku village where the owner’s grandmother still makes the best sata andagi I’ve had on the island. The hotel staff actually knows about places like this and will point you toward the real spots, not just the obvious tourist destinations. Plus, the location means you can hit the southern beaches early before the tour buses arrive, then retreat back to your quiet corner of the world. It’s expensive, sure – we’re talking serious money here – but for that 9.3 rating and five-star experience, you’re getting something pretty special. The kind of place where you actually feel rested when you leave, not just like you’ve been somewhere fancy.

Great view. Very good food. We had super nice presidential suite. (A bit used )

What could be improved: The property is a bit old . There are some parts that shall be changed upgraded . The owner shall invest money in order to have high standard and not destroyed parts with this cost . I did not liked that we did not get breakfast when leaving the property (early morning) with such a price and statement that this is 1 of top world hotels by Forbes 23 it was very disappointing . The beach is very small and in my opinion they shall take off the stones at the entrance to the water.

It is not clear how they charge massage : the price agreed was 11.000 and first day they have charged 11.000 and then the next day they have charged without saying : 12.500 ? Why no explanation .

Same with yoga : price for the instructor agreed 8.000 and the next day when we came 3 persons the price went up to 12.000( why ? If it was my private instructor ) ? No information in advance and explanation .

Hyakuna Garan is a beautiful gem, slightly quirky yet delightful. Set off a cliff (the lobby is on the 3rd level), the cliff face is lushly landscaped with trees and plants growing among a few large Ghibli-esque statues. The public areas are wonderful with glass panels allowing viewing of the "Ghibli" landscape on the cliff side and offering open views of the ocean on the other side. The resort is carefully built around mature banyan trees and is entirely constructed out of natural wood, limestone and marble. The open air baths are a major delight - very private with the outdoor bath, great views of the sea and deck chairs for restful and quiet contemplation. Each bath pavilion is individually named, with the Kanji character for "Hermitage" which is both quaint and apt. The food is excellent - the intricate Kaiseki style dinners are the highlight of the day. Hyakuna has staff speaking fluent English which is a major convenience for foreign guests. We hardly ventured out of the resort during the 3 days there. Overall we appreciated the peace, quiet and solitude - even though the resort was probably well booked during our stay.

Everything. The journey/drive to Hyakunagaran from the airport. From entering the carpark, the welcoming staff, the reception and the 86sqm room with 2x queen size bed each right up to the roof top bath. These are the best physical spaces we did not expect (booked with only limited info). Importantly both wife and I were so relaxed that we will be back.

What could be improved: What didn't I like? No having more time there in Okinawa.

Extremely friendly staff and a very pleasant stay in general. The rooms are nice and everything is clean and spacious. The staff really tries everything to realise your wishes. Proper 5 star service. The little remote area protects you from bigger tourism groups and there is a nice cafe just next to the hotel in the hills.

What could be improved: Just had some minor issues in communicating the details of my stay but the staff speaks english. May have been better if my japanese was better though. And the beach part of the hotel had more stones and shells than i would have expected from the pictures.
