Hyatt Regency Kyoto

HOTEL OVERVIEW

Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of hotels in Kyoto, and the Hyatt Regency honestly surprised me – in the best way possible. It’s tucked away in Higashiyama-ku, literally a two-minute walk from Sanjusangendo Temple (you know, the one with a thousand golden Buddhist statues). Most people rush past this area heading to the more famous Kiyomizu-dera, but honestly? This quieter pocket of the district is where you want to be.

The building itself is this interesting mix – it’s got that sleek Hyatt polish you’d expect, but they’ve actually managed to weave in traditional Japanese elements without making it feel like a theme park. The lobby has these gorgeous wood accents and this subtle incense scent that somehow doesn’t feel forced. Check-in was smooth, though I’d recommend arriving after 3 PM because the housekeeping team is thorough – I mean really thorough – and rooms might not be ready if you show up early. The staff speaks excellent English, which honestly makes a difference when you’re jet-lagged and trying to figure out dinner reservations.

What really sold me on this place was the location intelligence. You’re walking distance to Kyoto Station (about 15 minutes if you take the back streets), but you’re also right in the heart of temple country. I’d wake up early – like 6 AM early – and walk to Kiyomizu-dera before the crowds hit. There’s something magical about having those wooden terraces almost to yourself, then coming back to the hotel for a proper breakfast. The neighborhood gets busy around 10 AM when the tour buses arrive, but by evening it’s peaceful again. You’ll hear the temple bells in the distance, which sounds cheesy but is actually pretty wonderful when you’re trying to wind down.

The rooms are spacious by Japanese standards – I could actually open my suitcase without rearranging furniture. The bathrooms are particularly well done, with those deep soaking tubs that make you understand why Japanese bath culture is such a thing. WiFi is solid throughout, and the AC works properly (not always a given in older buildings). One small thing – the windows don’t open much, which bothered me initially, but the air filtration system is excellent and honestly needed during cherry blossom season when the pollen is intense.

Parking is available if you’re brave enough to drive in Kyoto (I wasn’t), and the hotel’s restaurant is actually worth eating at, which isn’t always the case with hotel dining. They do this incredible kaiseki-style breakfast that’s pricey but worth it at least once. The evening crowd tends to be a good mix of business travelers and tourists who’ve done their homework – not the “let’s hit every temple in one day” types, but people who actually want to experience the city.

The 8.6 rating makes sense to me. It’s not perfect – the fitness center is small and the concierge, while helpful, sometimes gives overly touristy recommendations. But for the location, the genuine attention to detail, and that rare feeling of being in Kyoto rather than just visiting it, this place delivers. Especially if you’re someone who appreciates being able to walk to incredible temples in the morning and decent restaurants at night without dealing with crowds or complicated train transfers.

I love this hotel. stayed a week this time and also last time with my husband. The rooms, staff, breakfast and location all great. A few economies have been made but you would not notice them - Japan like many other places is having severe financial difficulties.

What could be improved: Not much. Miss the tray Japanese breakfast which has to be ordered and not always available. Dislike some of their pushy guests from elsewhere in Asia and waste lots of food at the breakfast buffet which is unacceptable and bad form in Japan.

Great value for a 5 star hotel - similar in quality to other 5 star hotels but at significantly less cost. Beautiful room, clean, wonderful service, and good location - only 2-5 min walk to bus stops and 9 min walk to subway. Higashiyama attractions are 20 min walk away. Taxis are nearby with a 1-5 min wait. Will come back in the future!
