HOTEL OVERVIEW
You know what really hits you first about the Hyatt Regency Maui? It’s not just the lobby with those massive koi ponds (though honestly, kids go absolutely nuts for those fish) — it’s how they’ve managed to spread this place across 40 acres without making you feel like you need a golf cart to get anywhere. I mean, some of these Maui resorts are basically small cities, but this one actually feels walkable.
The location on Kaanapali Beach is pretty sweet, especially since you’re right in front of one of the better stretches of sand on the west side. Black Rock is literally right there at the north end of the beach, and if you’re into snorkeling at all, you’ll end up there anyway — it’s where all the sea turtles hang out. What I really appreciate is that you can walk to Whaler’s Village in about ten minutes if you want to grab dinner somewhere else, but honestly, the resort has enough going on that you might not need to. The Drums of the Pacific luau is actually one of the better ones on the island (I know, I know, tourist trap, but it’s genuinely well done), and Japengo has this spicy ahi roll that I still think about.
Here’s the thing though — this place gets busy, especially during whale season from December through April. The pool area can feel a bit like a zoo on weekends, but if you stake out a spot early or venture to the quieter pools near the Regency Club tower, you’ll be fine. The rooms are solid — nothing revolutionary, but the oceanview ones facing west give you those ridiculous Maui sunsets right from your lanai. Fair warning: the resort fee is real and it’s substantial, but it does include the Wi-Fi and some other stuff that you’d probably use anyway. Parking is free though, which is honestly a relief after you’ve been hit with $30-a-night parking fees at some of the other places around here. The spa is genuinely relaxing if you can swing it — they do this ocean-side massage thing that sounds cheesy but is actually incredible when you’re listening to the waves. Just book it for late afternoon if you can; the morning slots can be a bit bright and the trade winds sometimes pick up around midday.
