IKI RETREAT by Onko Chishin

You know what struck me first about IKI RETREAT? It’s that moment when you realize you’ve stumbled onto something genuinely special – and I mean that in the most un-touristy way possible. Tucked away in Katsumotocho on Iki Island, this place feels like someone’s incredibly tasteful secret hideaway that they’ve somehow decided to share with the world. The whole Onko Chishin concept really comes through here (it’s about finding beauty in imperfection, if you’re wondering), and honestly, it’s executed so thoughtfully that it never feels forced or gimmicky.

The location itself is pretty brilliant – you’re on this lesser-known island between Kyushu and Korea, which means you get that authentic Japanese island vibe without the crowds you’d find somewhere like Miyajima. The retreat sits in this almost meditative spot where you can actually hear the ocean, and the design works with the landscape instead of fighting it. What really got me was how they’ve managed to create this sense of isolation without making you feel cut off from everything – there’s WiFi that actually works, the staff genuinely knows the area (ask them about the local fishing spots or where to catch the best sunset), and they’ve thought through all those little details that matter when you’re trying to unwind. The rooms have this minimalist thing going on, but it’s warm minimalism, not cold and stark. You’ll find yourself noticing textures you normally wouldn’t – the way the wood feels, how the light changes throughout the day.

I’ll be honest, this isn’t a place for everyone. If you need a pool, multiple restaurants, or entertainment, you’ll probably be disappointed. But if you’re looking for somewhere to actually disconnect and reset – I mean really disconnect, not just Instagram about disconnecting – then this might be exactly what you need. The 9.3 rating makes sense once you’ve been there; it’s not perfect in a flashy way, but it’s perfect for what it’s trying to be. The island itself has this incredible seafood (the sea urchin here is insane), and you’re close enough to explore the archaeological sites if that’s your thing, but far enough from everything that you can just… exist for a while. Fair warning though – book ahead, especially during autumn when the weather’s ideal, because word is definitely getting out about this place.
