IRAPH SUI, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Miyako Okinawa

Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first pulled up to IRAPH SUI on Irabu Island – you know, Miyako gets overshadowed by the main Okinawa island sometimes, but this place makes a pretty compelling case for why you should make the trip out here. The hotel sits right on this gorgeous stretch of coastline that feels almost ridiculously pristine, and I mean that in the best way possible. You’re about a 15-minute drive from the main Miyako airport, which is actually perfect because you get that sense of escape without being completely cut off from civilization.

What really got me was how they’ve managed to blend this ultra-modern luxury feel with something that still feels authentically Okinawan. The lobby has these massive windows that frame the ocean view like living artwork, and there’s this subtle scent of hinoki wood mixed with ocean air that hits you the moment you walk in. The staff – and this might sound like I’m overselling it, but I’m not – they actually remember your name and your preferences without making it feel forced or scripted. I stayed for four nights and by day two, they knew I preferred my coffee black and that I liked to sit on the ocean-facing side of the restaurant for breakfast.

The rooms are what you’d expect from a Luxury Collection property, but with these thoughtful touches that show someone actually thought about how people live in a space. The bathroom has this deep soaking tub positioned so you can see the water while you’re in it (privacy isn’t an issue – the way it’s angled is perfect), and the bed linens are that perfect weight where you don’t wake up too hot or too cold. What I really appreciated was the balcony setup – it’s not huge, but it’s designed so the morning sun hits just right if you’re an early coffee person like me.

Here’s the thing though – and this is important if you’re planning a trip – Irabu Island doesn’t have a ton of dining options outside the hotel, so you’ll probably end up eating most of your meals here. Fortunately, the restaurant is actually excellent, with this chef who clearly knows his way around both local Okinawan ingredients and more international flavors. The goya (bitter melon) they serve isn’t the harsh, challenging version you might expect – they’ve found this way to prepare it that keeps the authentic taste but makes it approachable. Also, pro tip: if you’re driving around the island (which you should), there’s this tiny family-run place about 10 minutes away that does incredible soki soba, but the hotel concierge can point you toward spots like that if you ask.

The pool area deserves a mention too – it’s this infinity setup that makes you feel like you’re swimming right into the ocean, and it’s positioned so you get shade in the afternoon when the sun gets intense. I spent way more time there than I planned, just floating and watching the water change colors as the day went on. It’s the kind of place where doing absolutely nothing feels like exactly the right thing to do.
