HOTEL OVERVIEW

Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of places in Bend over the years, and Juniper Preserve honestly caught me off guard – in the best way possible. When you’re driving out on Pronghorn Club Drive, you sort of expect another cookie-cutter resort, but this place actually feels like someone took time to think about what a Central Oregon getaway should be. The whole property sits on this gorgeous stretch of high desert, and I mean, you can see the Cascades from pretty much everywhere, which never gets old.

What really struck me was how they managed to make it feel luxurious without being stuffy, you know? The rooms have these huge windows that frame the landscape like artwork, and the beds – honestly, I slept better there than I have in months. The staff genuinely knows the area too, which is refreshing. When I asked about hiking spots, the front desk guy didn’t just hand me a generic brochure; he told me about this lesser-known trail near Pilot Butte that locals actually use. Check-in was smooth (there’s plenty of parking, thank god), and the whole lobby has this warm, woody smell that somehow captures that pine-and-juniper scent you get hiking around here.

Here’s the thing though – it’s definitely a splurge, and you’ll want to book way ahead during summer or ski season because this place fills up fast. The location is a bit removed from downtown Bend (maybe 15 minutes), but that’s actually part of the charm. You get this sense of being tucked away in the high desert without feeling isolated. Evenings are incredibly quiet except for the occasional coyote, which my city friends found either magical or slightly unnerving depending on their wilderness comfort level. The restaurant is actually worth eating at, which isn’t always a given with hotel dining – they do this amazing trout dish with local ingredients that our server said changes seasonally. I’d definitely go back, especially in fall when the aspens are turning and you get those crisp mornings that make you remember why people move to Oregon in the first place.
