Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Kafuu Resort – I mean, Okinawa has plenty of beach hotels, right? But this place actually surprised me from the moment I walked into that airy lobby with ocean views stretching all the way to the horizon. The condo-style setup is brilliant if you’re staying more than a couple nights (and trust me, you’ll want to), since having a proper kitchen and living space makes it feel less like you’re camping out in a hotel room and more like you’ve got your own little slice of paradise.

What really gets me about this place is how they’ve nailed the balance between resort luxury and that laid-back Okinawan vibe. The pools – there are actually several scattered around the property – never feel crowded, even during peak season when families from mainland Japan descend on the island. I spent most afternoons at the infinity pool overlooking Fuchaku Beach, which honestly might be one of the most underrated stretches of sand on Onna’s coast. The water here is this incredible turquoise that looks almost fake in photos, and since Kafuu sits right on the beach, you can literally roll out of bed and be snorkeling within ten minutes. The coral formations just offshore are surprisingly healthy too – I spotted more tropical fish here than at some of the “famous” diving spots further north.

Here’s something the booking sites don’t tell you: the kitchenettes are actually worth using. There’s a decent supermarket (San-A) about a five-minute drive away where you can grab fresh sashimi, Orion beer, and those addictive purple sweet potato treats Okinawa’s famous for. After spending a fortune on resort meals at other places, being able to make breakfast on your balcony while watching the sunrise was kind of perfect. Speaking of balconies – request an ocean-view room if you can swing it. The garden view rooms are nice enough, but waking up to that endless blue horizon is worth the extra cost. The staff here actually knows what they’re doing too, which sounds basic but you’d be surprised how rare that is. Check-in was smooth, they helped arrange a rental car without the usual runaround, and housekeeping somehow managed to be thorough without being intrusive. The resort does get busy during Golden Week and summer holidays – that’s when you’ll hear more kids around the pools and the breakfast buffet gets picked over pretty quickly. But even then, it never felt chaotic like some of the mega-resorts down in Naha. If you’re looking for that sweet spot between authentic Okinawan hospitality and modern comfort, Kafuu really delivers.
