Kaitaia Motor Lodge Overview
You know what struck me first about Kaitaia Motor Lodge? It’s one of those places that doesn’t try to be something it’s not – and honestly, that’s refreshing. Sitting right on North Road, it’s got this straightforward, no-nonsense vibe that actually works really well for what Kaitaia is all about. I mean, you’re not here for fancy cocktail bars and infinity pools anyway – you’re probably either heading up to Cape Reinga or just finished the Te Araroa trail, and you want somewhere clean and comfortable to crash.
The rooms are what I’d call “properly functional” – everything works, the beds are actually decent (I was expecting those saggy motel mattresses but was pleasantly surprised), and there’s enough space to spread out your gear without feeling cramped. The air conditioning is a godsend during those humid Northland summers, and the units are set back enough from the road that traffic noise isn’t really an issue. What I really appreciated were the little thoughtful touches – good water pressure in the shower, decent WiFi that actually reaches the bed, and those heavy curtains that block out the early morning light when you want to sleep in. The kitchenette setup is basic but it’ll do you fine if you’ve grabbed supplies from the New World down the road or picked up some fresh fish from the wharf.
Location-wise, you’re perfectly positioned for exploring the Far North without the tourist circus you get closer to the Bay of Islands. It’s about a 10-minute walk into town center where you can grab a proper coffee at Beachcomber or stock up on supplies before heading to Ninety Mile Beach – though honestly, most people just drive everywhere up here anyway. The staff seem to know their stuff about local attractions too, which is handy when you’re trying to figure out tide times for the beach or whether the road to the lighthouse is passable. For a 3-star place, it punches above its weight – that 8.1 rating makes sense when you consider it’s doing exactly what it promises without any pretense. Sure, the decor isn’t going to win any awards and you might hear your neighbors if they’re being particularly enthusiastic, but it’s clean, comfortable, and well-maintained. If you’re looking for a reliable base to explore New Zealand’s northernmost reaches without breaking the bank, this place delivers.

Was impressed with cleanliness and layout of rooms. Was expecting a older run down vibe but pleasantly surprised.
