HOTEL OVERVIEW

Nestled in the enchanting hot spring town of Beppu, the 4-star Kannawaen offers an exceptional Japanese hospitality experience that has earned it an outstanding 9.1 rating from satisfied guests. This refined establishment is strategically located in Kannawa, one of Beppu’s most famous onsen districts, renowned for its therapeutic thermal waters and distinctive “jigoku” (hell) hot springs. Situated at 345 Kannawa in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture, Kannawaen provides the perfect base from which to explore this celebrated region of Kyushu island. The hotel’s traditional Japanese architecture harmonizes beautifully with its natural surroundings, offering guests an authentic cultural immersion while maintaining the highest standards of comfort and service expected of a premier 4-star property. The exceptional 9.1 rating of Kannawaen speaks volumes about the memorable experiences it consistently delivers to its guests. This near-perfect score reflects the meticulous attention to detail evident throughout the property, from the elegantly appointed accommodations to the impeccable service provided by the dedicated staff. Many guests particularly praise the hotel’s onsen facilities, which showcase the region’s famous mineral-rich waters known for their healing properties. The property likely features both indoor and outdoor bathing options, allowing visitors to soak in therapeutic waters while enjoying views of the surrounding volcanic landscape that makes Beppu so unique. The Kannawa district itself is famous for its “steam cooking,” where local delicacies are prepared using the natural geothermal heat – a culinary tradition that Kannawaen may incorporate into its dining experiences. While situated in a historic hot spring town, the hotel undoubtedly balances traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern amenities to ensure complete comfort for international and domestic travelers alike. Beyond the confines of this exceptional property, guests of Kannawaen are perfectly positioned to explore the wonders of Beppu, one of Japan’s most famous onsen resorts. The hotel’s address in the Kannawa district places it near several of the city’s famed “Hells of Beppu” – spectacularly colored hot springs for viewing rather than bathing. Visitors can easily access attractions like the cobalt blue waters of Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell) or the crimson pools of Chinoike Jigoku (Blood Pond Hell), all within the vicinity. The traditional Japanese ambiance of Kannawa, with its steam-filled streets and historic bathhouses, creates an atmospheric backdrop for cultural exploration. For those wishing to venture further, the sand baths of Beppu Beach, the Takasakiyama Monkey Park, and the scenic Beppu Ropeway are all accessible from this centrally located property. Whether seeking relaxation in mineral-rich waters, cultural immersion in a historic hot spring town, or culinary adventures featuring local specialties, guests at the highly-rated Kannawaen find themselves perfectly positioned to experience the very best of what Beppu and the broader Oita region have to offer.

The property reached out to us beforehand to check on the needs of my kids and when I told them my daughter had a milk allergy, went out of their way to ensure that appropriate measures were taken to cater to her. We felt very welcome.

The hospitality and all the attention from the staff was awesome. The food was excellent, exceeding our expectations. The room was very clean and the amenities were fabulous. The price of the drinks and goods was very fair.

The property is clean and beautiful. We also like the private outdoor hot spring! Staff is really nice and friendly.

What could be improved: The dinner portion seems to be little less than other ryokans that I have been to.

Absolutely stunning hotel and room. I’ve never felt as relaxed as I have staying at a hotel before, the room with the private onsen is 100% worth it. We tried both the breakfast and the dinner (not the tenpanyaki option), and the food was delightful albeit pricey. Location wise the hotel is perfect if you want to see the hot springs, being...

Location wise the hotel is perfect if you want to see the hot springs, being practically in between 2 of the 7 hells. Would definitely come again if I’m ever stressed.

This was easy by far one of the best experiences I’ve ever had with my family traveling. Upfront it is a beautiful location very conveniently located to visiting five of the seven “Hells”. The grounds provide a calm and relaxing environment with mountain views. The staff was exceptional and patient helping us truly enjoy this place with our young children. Our room included and in room traditional Japanese bath. We were able to launch by car to visit Kifune castle and Takasakiyama. Despite initially being told reservations would not be available for Teppanyaki the staff went above and beyond to try to find an opening and ultimately accommodated us. The food was excellent. The location is also convenient to a nearby 7-Eleven for snacks and re-supply for day outings. The check-in and checkout process works very well.

What could be improved: Leaving!
