Kannawaen Overview
You know what struck me first about Kannawaen? The smell. I mean that in the best way possible – walking up to this place on that narrow Kannawa street, you’re hit with this incredible sulfuric steam that’s just… well, it’s pure Beppu. The hotel sits right in the heart of the hot spring district, and honestly, you can’t get more authentic than this. It’s one of those ryokan-style places that manages to feel both traditional and surprisingly comfortable for a 4-star spot.
The thing about staying in Kannawa is that you’re basically living inside a geothermal wonderland. From my room window, I could see steam venting from the ground across the street – locals actually use these natural steam vents to cook vegetables and eggs, which you’ll probably end up doing yourself because it’s impossible to resist. The hotel staff will point you toward the best public onsen nearby (there are literally dozens within walking distance), but honestly, their own baths are pretty fantastic. The water has that proper mineral bite to it, and late evening soaks became my daily ritual pretty quickly.
What really sets Kannawaen apart though is how they’ve nailed that balance between authentic Japanese hospitality and practical comfort. The rooms aren’t huge – this is Japan, after all – but everything feels thoughtfully designed. Tatami floors, low tables, the whole traditional setup, but with modern touches that actually work. The futon bedding is way more comfortable than you’d expect, and the air circulation is surprisingly good considering you’re surrounded by hot springs. I was worried about the sulfur smell being overwhelming indoors, but they’ve got that figured out.
The staff here really knows their stuff too. Not just the usual polite service – though that’s definitely there – but genuine local knowledge. They’ll tell you which onsen are less crowded in the mornings, where to grab the best steamed buns in the neighborhood, and how to navigate the winding streets without getting completely lost. Parking can be a bit tricky since the streets in this area are pretty narrow, but they’ve got a small lot and the staff will actually help you squeeze in if you’re not confident with tight spaces.
Location-wise, you’re about a 15-minute walk from Beppu Station, but honestly, once you’re settled in Kannawa, you might not want to leave. There’s something almost hypnotic about this neighborhood – the constant gentle hissing of steam, locals going about their daily routines around these ancient hot springs, tiny shops selling everything from onsen eggs to handmade soaps. It gets busy during cherry blossom season and the autumn months, but even then, it never feels touristy in that overwhelming way.
If I’m being completely honest, this isn’t the place for someone wanting a typical hotel experience. But if you want to actually understand what makes Beppu special – beyond just the Instagram shots of colorful hot springs – Kannawaen gives you that authentic immersion without sacrificing comfort. That 9.1 rating makes perfect sense once you’ve spent a night here.
Guest Reviews
The property reached out to us beforehand to check on the needs of my kids and when I told them my daughter had a milk allergy, went out of their way to ensure that appropriate measures were taken to cater to her. We felt very welcome.
The hospitality and all the attention from the staff was awesome. The food was excellent, exceeding our expectations. The room was very clean and the amenities were fabulous. The price of the drinks and goods was very fair. What could be improved:...

The onsen is super comfortable.
The property is clean and beautiful. We also like the private outdoor hot spring! Staff is really nice and friendly.
What could be improved: The dinner portion seems to be little less than other ryokans that I have been to.
The property is very interesting
Is a very large facility with a long walkway to the room
Absolutely stunning hotel and room. I’ve never felt as relaxed as I have staying at a hotel before, the room with the private onsen is 100% worth it. We tried both the breakfast and the dinner (not the tenpanyaki option), and the food was delightful...
