HOTEL OVERVIEW
You know what caught me off guard about King and Queen Hotel Suites? Walking up to the corner of King and Queen Streets (yes, the name actually makes perfect sense once you’re there), I was expecting another generic business hotel. Instead, this place has this understated elegance that feels authentically New Plymouth – not trying too hard, but definitely getting it right.
The suites themselves are honestly impressive. I mean, when they say “suites,” they actually mean it – there’s proper separation between the living area and bedroom, plus kitchenettes that aren’t just for show. The windows are massive, and depending on which side you’re on, you’ll either catch glimpses of the Tasman Sea or look out over the surprisingly charming streetscape below. The beds are that perfect firmness where you sink in just enough without feeling like you’re being swallowed, and honestly, the linens feel more expensive than what you’d expect at this price point. One thing though – the air conditioning can be a bit aggressive, so definitely play around with those controls when you first arrive.
What really sells this place is the location. You’re literally a three-minute walk to Puke Ariki (the museum and library complex that’s become sort of the cultural heart of the city), and if you head down toward the waterfront, the coastal walkway starts practically at your doorstep. The staff actually knows the area – when I asked about running routes, the guy at reception didn’t just hand me a generic map but told me about the loop around Lake Mangamahoe that locals use for training. Parking is surprisingly stress-free too, which anyone who’s tried to navigate New Plymouth’s town center will appreciate. The neighborhood gets quiet after dinner time, but you’re close enough to Devon Street that grabbing coffee or a decent meal never requires planning ahead. During Taranaki arts festivals (which happen more often than you’d think), this corner location puts you right in the middle of everything without the chaos of being on the main strip. That 9.4 rating makes sense once you’ve stayed here – it’s those little details like actually hot water pressure, curtains that block out light completely, and check-in that takes two minutes instead of twenty that add up to something genuinely comfortable.

Beautiful place to stay. Sound proof room, black out shade. Waterfall shower. Friendly staff
What could be improved: Only thing is we booked the spa bath suite specifically for the spa bath but the jets wouldn’t work which was a little disappointing. However, no one’s fault if they weren’t aware of it beforehand. Would stay here again :)
