Kona Kai Resort & Spa, a Noble House Resort Overview
First Impressions
When I first pulled up to Kona Kai Resort & Spa, a Noble House Resort on Shelter Island Drive, I honestly wasn’t expecting much — I mean, it’s tucked away on this quiet peninsula that most tourists completely miss. But you know what? That’s exactly what makes this place special. The four-star property sits right on San Diego Bay, and the moment you step out of your car (there’s parking right on site, which is actually a big deal in San Diego), you’re hit with these incredible water views that stretch all the way to downtown.
The Setting
Point Loma is one of those neighborhoods that locals love to keep secret, and Shelter Island feels almost like a hidden village within the city. You’re literally surrounded by water on three sides here — the bay on one side, the marina filled with sailboats and yachts on the other. I watched couples walking the shoreline path during sunset, and honestly, I get why the location scores so high with romantic travelers. The downtown skyline twinkles across the water at night, but you’re far enough away from the hustle to actually hear the waves lapping against the shore.
The Accommodations
My room faced the bay — and let me tell you, waking up to that view never gets old. The accommodations have this relaxed California coastal vibe without trying too hard, if that makes sense. The décor feels fresh and beachy but not overly themed, with comfortable furnishings and sliding doors that open right onto a private patio or balcony. What I really appreciated was how quiet everything was — you’d never guess you’re just minutes from the airport and downtown.
Wellness and Activities
The spa here is where this place really shines for anyone seeking restoration. It’s not huge, but the treatments feel genuinely therapeutic rather than just pampering — I had a massage therapist who actually knew what she was doing with my chronically tight shoulders. The fitness center overlooks the water (because of course it does), and there’s something motivating about running on a treadmill while watching sailboats glide by. If you’re into fishing, you can literally cast a line right from the resort’s shoreline, though I spent most of my time just walking the waterfront path that connects to the rest of Shelter Island.
Why Guests Love It
This isn’t the kind of place where you’ll find crowds of families or party groups — it attracts people who want to actually unwind. The restaurant serves solid California cuisine with those same bay views, and the staff seems to genuinely care about creating a peaceful atmosphere. What really sets Kona Kai apart is its location — you’re close enough to explore Balboa Park, the Gaslamp Quarter, or catch a ferry to Coronado, but when you return each evening, you feel like you’ve escaped to your own private retreat. It’s that rare combination of accessibility and tranquility that makes this place work so well for couples and anyone seeking authentic restoration without the pretense.
Guest Reviews
The location was perfect for our getaway. Loved the marina view from our private balcony and the firepits. The staff were all friendly and extremely helpful. Enjoyed that the resort had everything we needed and we never felt rushed.
Gorgeous location. Of the hotels on Shelter Island, loved the location at the end. Beds were super, super plush and comfortable. Loved the campfires at night.

Upon arrival I was greeted by friendly valet. was promptly greeted at front desk and Shannan was every so friendly. Room was not ready as we arrived early. I was able to check in, given access to facilities and parking. When room was ready received...
The mattresses and bedding are very uncomfortable. No room service. Housekeeping was rude. We asked him for two clean towels for my 5 and 8 year old on our way to the pool because they were freezing and he kept saying we have to get it by the pool....
