Koura Bay Golf Resort Overview
You know what surprised me about Koura Bay Golf Resort? It actually feels like someone took a proper golf resort and dropped it right into one of New Zealand’s most dramatic coastal settings. I mean, when you’re driving up Koura Bay Drive – and honestly, the approach alone is worth it – you get this sense that you’re heading somewhere special, not just another cookie-cutter resort.
The thing is, Kaikoura isn’t really known for its golf scene (it’s all about the whale watching and crayfish, obviously), but somehow this place makes it work. The course itself sprawls along these rolling hills with the Kaikoura Ranges looming behind you and glimpses of the Pacific when the layout opens up. I stayed here during shoulder season in March, and the staff mentioned it gets properly busy over summer – which makes sense because you’re getting that rare combo of mountain and ocean views that’s hard to find elsewhere on the South Island. The rooms are what you’d expect from a 4.5-star place, though I appreciated the little touches like decent coffee machines and blackout curtains that actually work (you know how hit-or-miss that can be).
What really won me over was how they’ve managed to feel upscale without being stuffy about it. The restaurant overlooks the course, and while the menu leans into that whole “fresh local ingredients” thing that every place claims, they actually deliver – especially with the seafood, which frankly would be criminal to mess up this close to the coast. Parking’s easy, check-in was smooth, and the whole vibe is more “comfortable elegance” than “look at how fancy we are.” The golf course is challenging enough to keep things interesting but not so brutal that you’ll lose half your balls in the rough (though the wind off the ocean can definitely mess with your game). I’d say if you’re planning to visit, maybe avoid the absolute peak of summer unless you book way ahead – locals told me the place fills up with both international visitors and Kiwis making the drive down from Christchurch. But honestly, even if you’re not much of a golfer, there’s something pretty special about waking up to those mountain views and knowing you’re just a short drive from some of the best marine wildlife experiences in the country.

I loved the location and view. Just beautiful and the price was great value. It was our favourite place to stay on our whole trip. Everything was spotless and relaxing.
What could be improved: Nothing at all. We will definitely be back!
Amazing service, great golf course, room was exceptional!
The location between the mountains and the coast was absolutely amazing. The staff member we saw onsite was so friendly and gave great local recommendations. What could be improved: There wasn't anything to dislike really, I think some other...
Stunning view of the sunrise and very kind and friendly staff members
Me and my husband enjoyed the stay at Koura Bay Gold Resort. Amazing hospitality and very spacious room with beautiful view. Everything was above our expectations. We enjoyed watching sunrise from our room which was just mind blowing. We will...
We loved the peace and tranquility and fabulous views over the gold course out to the ocean. We are rural people and struggle to find quiet accomodation. Loved our stay.
What could be improved: Wasn't a lot of space to make our breaky.
Comfortable, clean and spacious
What could be improved: The only thing I could suggest would be some directions to the property and rooms for people arriving in the dark /after 6 when reception is shut,
Lovely room, amazing attentive staff, everything you needed for a stay in Kaikoura. What could be improved: Amazing free parking but definitely need a car to stay here, which was made perfectly clear and we did have a car so worked amazingly well...
Amazing accomodation!! So beautiful and amazing value for money. Brand new bathroom, the BEST view of Kaikoura. The most beautiful sunrise I’ve ever seen! Will definitely be recommending to others.
