Kouyurou Ikawa Overview
You know what caught me off guard about Kouyurou Ikawa? The sound. I mean, you’re tucked away in this quiet corner of Izunokuni – honestly, most people zip past this area heading to the hot springs in Atami or Hakone – but there’s this incredible stillness here that you just don’t get at the bigger resort towns. The ryokan sits right in Kona, which is basically residential neighborhoods mixed with small farms, and when you wake up in the morning, you hear roosters instead of tour buses. It’s about a 15-minute walk to Izunokuni Panorama Park if you’re into that cable car thing, but really, the whole appeal is just being away from everything without actually being in the middle of nowhere.
The building itself feels properly traditional without being stuffy about it – you know how some places make you feel like you’re going to break something just by breathing? Not here. The tatami in my room had that perfect give when you walk on it, and honestly, the futon setup was way more comfortable than I expected (I’m usually a hotel bed person, but this actually worked). The onsen situation is solid too, though don’t expect anything massive – it’s more intimate, which I actually preferred. You’ll probably have it to yourself if you go in the early evening or late morning. The staff doesn’t hover, which I appreciated, but they’re right there when you need them. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward – none of that overly formal ceremony that can feel a bit much after a long travel day.
What really makes this place work is the location, honestly. You’re close enough to day-trip to bigger attractions – Mishima’s about 20 minutes by car, and you can easily hit Shuzenji or even make it to Hakone if you want the full hot spring resort experience for an afternoon – but you come back to something that feels authentic rather than touristy. The breakfast (and I’m assuming dinner if you opt for it) leans heavily into local ingredients, and you can taste the difference. I mean, the rice alone was incredible, probably grown within a few kilometers of where you’re sitting. Parking was no issue at all, which isn’t always a given in Japan, and the whole area is quiet enough that you’ll actually sleep well. The 8.3 rating feels about right – it’s not going to blow your mind with luxury, but it delivers exactly what it promises without any unpleasant surprises. If you’re looking for that authentic ryokan experience without fighting crowds or paying resort prices, this is actually a pretty smart choice.

The rooms were a lot bigger than anything we’ve had in Japan this far! Near lots of beautiful walking areas. The public bath was very clean and lovely outdoor viewpoint.
What could be improved: Smelled Smokey in the elevator and bathrooms.
The spa is super amazing; it's the highlight of our stay! The food is good but can be improved. The room is very big with a nice view; the facilities are a bit old, but all are in good working condition. The staff are super helpful and friendly :) ...
Good Onsen facility especially the private hot bath area was excellent, except the booking period for use of such facility is a bit short. What could be improved: Rather poor house keeping as the hotel does not bother to replenish the empty cotton...
