HOTEL OVERVIEW
Honestly, when you first pull up to La Cantera Resort & Spa, it feels like you’ve stumbled onto some exclusive golf course rather than a hotel. The sprawling property sits up on this elevated spot in northwest San Antonio, and I mean elevated – you can actually see the Hill Country rolling out in front of you. It’s about twenty minutes from the River Walk (which is perfect, because you get that resort vibe without being stuck in tourist central), and right next to The Shops at La Cantera if you need to grab something or just want to wander around.
What really struck me about this place is how they’ve managed to make it feel both polished and relaxed at the same time. The lobby has this sort of Spanish colonial thing going on – lots of warm stone and iron details – but it doesn’t feel stuffy or overdone. You know what I loved? The way the whole resort kind of flows with the natural landscape instead of fighting against it. The pools (there are actually several) are scattered around the property, and the main one has this infinity edge that makes it look like it just melts into the horizon. I spent way too much time there during the afternoon, honestly. The spa is tucked away in its own quiet corner, and they do this thing where they incorporate local ingredients – I’m talking prickly pear and sage – which sounds gimmicky but actually works.
The rooms are solid without being flashy. I had one of the casita-style suites, and the bathroom alone was bigger than most hotel rooms I’ve stayed in. Big soaking tub, separate shower, all that good stuff. But here’s what I actually appreciated more – the little details like really good blackout curtains (crucial in Texas where the sun is basically aggressive), and the fact that the AC could actually keep up with August in San Antonio. Parking is valet only, which is kind of annoying if you’re used to doing your own thing, but the guys are quick about it. The resort fee situation is what you’d expect for a place like this – not cheap, but you do get access to pretty much everything including the fitness center and pool areas. If you’re planning to visit, just know that weekends get busy with locals doing staycations and wedding parties (there’s a beautiful event space overlooking the golf course), but weekday afternoons are perfect for having the place mostly to yourself. The restaurant scene is decent – not mind-blowing, but way better than typical hotel food – and if you want something more adventurous, you’re close enough to drive into town for proper San Antonio barbacoa or puffy tacos.

Buffet breakfast awesome. Loved the golf course, but if you stay at resort - you should get some kind of discount - a bit pricey overall comparted to other courses of its standing. Love the adult pool but needs more staff to serve the customers.

Prices at the resort for food and drinks are reasonable and there are plenty of options so you really don’t need to leave the resort.
