HOTEL OVERVIEW
You know what caught me off guard about La Choza VIP Roja? The name makes it sound way more rustic than it actually is – I mean, “choza” literally means hut, but this place is honestly more of a sleek four-star operation right on Avenida Costanera. The location is pretty much perfect if you’re trying to explore both Coquimbo and La Serena, since you’re basically positioned between the two cities with the coastline right there. I stayed here last spring and found myself walking along the waterfront every morning – there’s something about that northern Chilean coast light that just hits different, especially when you can step out of your hotel and be on the malecón in like two minutes.
The rooms have this interesting mix of modern comfort with subtle nods to local style, though honestly, what sold me was how quiet everything was despite being on a main avenue. I was worried about traffic noise, but the windows must be pretty well insulated because I barely heard anything once I closed them. The staff actually knows the area well too – not just the typical tourist spots, but when I asked about good seafood that wasn’t totally overpriced, the front desk guy sent me to this place called El Rincón del Marinero that I never would’ve found otherwise. And parking? Yeah, they’ve got it sorted, which if you’ve driven around this part of Chile, you know that’s not always a given.
What really sets this place apart though is how it manages to feel upscale without being stuffy – like, the 8.4 rating makes sense when you experience the whole package. The breakfast spread was better than I expected, with actual local touches like sopaipillas and good coffee, not just the standard continental stuff. Plus, you’re positioned perfectly for day trips up to the Elqui Valley or down to the penguin reserves at Isla Damas, but honestly, sometimes I just enjoyed hanging around Coquimbo’s port area in the evening. There’s this whole scene with fishing boats coming in and families walking around that feels genuinely Chilean, not performed for tourists. The hotel gets busy during summer months (December through February), but even then it never felt chaotic – I think they just run a tight ship. If you’re looking for a solid base to explore the region without breaking the bank or dealing with resort-style crowds, this is actually a really smart choice.
