HOTEL OVERVIEW

You know what caught me off guard about La Vista Akangawa? It’s not just another lakeside hotel trying to capitalize on the Akan-ko views – this place actually gets it right. I mean, when you’re dealing with a location this spectacular (literally right on Lake Akan with the volcanic peaks in the background), it would be easy to phone it in, but they didn’t.

The lobby hits you with this warm, woody atmosphere that feels authentically Hokkaido without being kitschy about it. Check-in was smooth – no endless paperwork or waiting around, which honestly matters when you’ve been driving through those winding mountain roads to get here. The staff switches between Japanese and English pretty seamlessly, and they seem to genuinely know the area well. One of the front desk folks told me the best times to catch the lake mist in the morning (around 6 AM if you’re wondering), which turned out to be spot-on advice.

Here’s the thing about the rooms – they’re not massive, but the tatami areas feel right for the setting, and those lake-facing windows are basically floor-to-ceiling nature documentaries. I stayed in November, so the autumn colors were still clinging to the mountains, and honestly, I probably spent too much time just staring out there with my coffee. The onsen situation is where this place really shines though. The outdoor bath overlooks the lake, and there’s something almost meditative about soaking in hot spring water while watching the steam rise off Akan-ko in the early morning. Fair warning – it gets busy around sunset (everyone wants those golden hour photos), but if you go right after dinner or early morning, you’ll often have it to yourself.

The location puts you right in Akankohan Onsen town, which means you can walk to the Ainu cultural center and those little souvenir shops without dealing with parking. Actually, parking at the hotel is free and easy – they’ve got a decent-sized lot that doesn’t turn into a nightmare even during peak season. You’re also close enough to hear the lake lapping at night if you crack a window, but far enough from the main road that traffic isn’t an issue. The restaurants in town are walkable, though honestly, the hotel’s own dining room does a solid job with local ingredients – the venison was particularly good, and they source fish from the lake itself. I mean, when you’re this close to the source, why not?

What really sold me on this place is how it balances being a proper resort with feeling connected to the natural setting. You’re not isolated behind glass walls – you can actually engage with Lake Akan and the surrounding forests. The hiking trails start basically from the hotel grounds, and if you’re into the whole “digital detox” thing, the cell service is spotty enough to help with that (though the hotel WiFi works fine). It’s the kind of place where you end up staying an extra night because leaving feels premature, you know?

Beautiful scenery. Very peaceful.

What could be improved: Dinner at 8 pm is a bit late

Beautiful location, immersed in nature. The rooms were exceptional. We could have sat at the window watching the river and wildlife for hours. On top of that were the wonderful meals.

What could be improved: Nothing.

What could be improved: Duvet - too hot non-breathable material. Can’t be under duvet for too long as it gets really hot. And can’t stay uncovered for too long as it gets too cold (although we didn’t turn on the heater as we didn’t like sleeping with the heater switched on). Perhaps resort should consider using a better duvet or provide a thinner option

It is a really wonderful place to stay with fantastic food and fun little things to engage with. Close to Akanko by car. There are 3 private baths downstairs and you don't need to book them, just check if they're available. There's also a nice bath in the room.

What could be improved: To avoid this situation please let them know well in advance if you have any dietary needs. Reception staff made me feel awful about being vegetarian. Throughout this stay it was presumed I couldn't understand Japanese so I understood her complaints right in front of us. My husband can't understand Japanese and he said the body language and sighing were clearly complaints anyway. We are staying in many places on this trip with meals included but this was the only time I felt awful about being vegetarian. She asked if we would like dinner and that's when I said, and she said it won't be possible. As for breakfast she made a point of complaining to a colleague beside her (who didn't engage with the complaints) before calling the restaurant staff and asking. The result was fine, I was allowed to eat breakfast, although there was no choice between western and Japanese style like my husband. The food was superb! But the attitude about the situation made me feel awful and could have been kinder.

Location, room, food, facility, and staff. I would give 11 star if I can. We love our room number 1110. The view is amazing. The bed is super comfortable.

What could be improved: Nothing.

excellent location in the mid of the forest,
many views of deers at night in front of the hotel room
phantastic views on river
great Japanese food, great service
large room
massage chair
very nice environment

What could be improved: Fresh air into the room as all windows you could open were very low so that cold air could only reach your feet

How can you travel all the way here to scrimp a few dollars but sacrifice the wondrous experience living by a flowing river?

Sumptuous spread of food despite some of the negative reviews - only meal that could do better was dinner from the first night (sorry you one-nighters). Stayed a total of 3 nights and the food thereafter is nowhere inferior to ryokans elsewhere.

What could be improved: The rooms are already set to heating even though it was a hotter than usual autumn, you can see that this place is going to be so cosy in the deep of the winter. Driving is a must to get here but it is very much worth it.
