You know what hits you first at Laguna Cliffs? It’s not the lobby or the fancy entrance – it’s stepping out onto that bluff and realizing you’re literally perched above the Pacific with Dana Point Harbor spread out below like some postcard that shouldn’t actually exist in real life. I mean, the Marriott brand usually plays it pretty safe, but this spot is honestly spectacular. The hotel sits right on Park Lantern (which, let’s be honest, sounds way fancier than it is – it’s basically the road that winds up from PCH), and while the building itself has that sort of 1980s resort vibe that’s either charming or dated depending on your mood, the location more than makes up for any architectural quirks.

What really works here is how they’ve managed to feel both secluded and accessible. You’re maybe three minutes from Salt Creek Beach if you take the little trail down (though fair warning – it’s a bit of a hike back up), and Dana Point’s main drag with all the restaurants is close enough that you don’t feel trapped on property. The spa actually deserves its reputation – I’ve been to plenty of hotel spas that feel like afterthoughts, but this one has that dim, eucalyptus-scented vibe that makes you forget you’re basically in suburbia. The pools are solid too, especially the main one that faces the ocean, though it gets pretty crowded during summer weekends when all the LA families descend. Honestly, if you can swing it, try to visit during the shoulder seasons – April or October maybe – when the weather’s still gorgeous but you’re not fighting crowds for a decent lounge chair.

The rooms themselves are… well, they’re Marriott rooms, which means they’re perfectly fine without being particularly memorable. But here’s the thing – you’re probably not going to spend much time inside anyway because those ocean-view balconies are legitimately addictive. I found myself out there with coffee every morning just watching the boats head out from the harbor. The service has that California-casual thing down pretty well – friendly without being overbearing – and check-in was surprisingly smooth even during what seemed like a busy weekend. Parking’s included, which is actually a big deal around here since some of the boutique places down by the water will hit you with $30-a-night fees. Sure, it’s not the most cutting-edge luxury experience you’ll find along the coast, and the 8.1 rating feels about right – it’s very good at what it does without trying to be something it’s not. But sometimes that’s exactly what you want: a place that nails the basics while sitting on one of the prettiest stretches of coastline in Orange County.
