Lake Shikotsu Tsuruga Bessou AO no ZA Overview
Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first pulled up to Lake Shikotsu Tsuruga Bessou AO no ZA – the name’s a mouthful, but locals just call it “AO no ZA” and trust me, once you’re there, you’ll understand why this place has such a reputation. It sits right on the edge of Lake Shikotsu, about 40 minutes from New Chitose Airport, and the moment you step out of your car (parking’s actually really easy here, unlike some of the cramped onsen hotels), you’re hit with this incredible view that makes the drive through Shikotsu-Toya National Park totally worth it.
What really gets me about this place is how they’ve managed to feel both luxurious and authentically Japanese without trying too hard. The lobby overlooks the lake through these massive floor-to-ceiling windows, and you know what? The staff actually remembers your name – not just because they’re well-trained, but because the place isn’t huge and overwhelming like some of those resort chains.
The onsen here is fed by natural hot springs, obviously, but the outdoor bath facing the lake is something else entirely. I mean, soaking in those mineral-rich waters while watching the mist roll off Shikotsu in the early morning… it’s one of those moments that makes you forget you have emails waiting back home. The water temperature is perfect year-round, though I’d avoid peak Golden Week if you want a more peaceful experience – it gets pretty busy then.
The rooms are spacious by Japanese standards (and I’ve stayed in my share of tiny Tokyo hotels), with tatami floors and that clean, minimalist aesthetic that actually helps you relax instead of just looking pretty for Instagram. What surprised me was the attention to small details – the yukata robes are high quality, there’s a coffee machine that doesn’t suck, and the futon bedding is legitimately comfortable, not just “charming.”
The kaiseki dinners showcase local Hokkaido ingredients, and honestly, the seafood here rivals what you’ll find in Sapporo’s Susukino district. Breakfast isn’t an afterthought either – they do this amazing spread with local dairy and vegetables that’ll ruin hotel continental breakfasts for you forever. The only minor thing is that the rooms facing away from the lake are obviously less spectacular, so it’s worth splurging for a lake view if your budget allows. But really, with that 9.5 rating, this isn’t just another pretty healing resort – it’s the kind of place that makes you understand why people become obsessed with Japanese hospitality.
