HOTEL OVERVIEW

Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first pulled up to Mizu no Uta – the name alone had me practicing pronunciation in the car. But the moment you step into this place, you get it. The entire hotel feels like it’s floating on Lake Shikotsu, with floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the water so perfectly it’s almost ridiculous. I mean, they really committed to this whole “song of water” concept.

What actually sets this place apart isn’t just the obvious stuff (though yeah, those lake views are pretty spectacular). It’s the onsen experience that’ll ruin you for other hot spring resorts. The outdoor baths literally hang over the lake – you’re soaking in mineral-rich water while watching steam rise off Shikotsu’s famously clear surface. Pro tip: go right before sunset when the light hits the surrounding mountains just right. Also, the water here stays unfrozen year-round, which is kind of amazing considering how brutal Hokkaido winters can get. You’ll see locals from Chitose making the 40-minute drive just for the day-use baths, and that tells you something.

The rooms are where they really nailed the balance between luxury and that cozy ryokan feeling. Mine had a private onsen on the balcony – which sounds excessive until you’re actually using it at 6 AM with zero other humans in sight. The kaiseki dinners are proper affairs with local Hokkaido ingredients (the crab was insane), though I’ll be honest, after a few courses I was ready to just sit by the lake with a beer. Speaking of which, the bar overlooks the water and stays reasonably quiet even during peak season. Parking’s included and actually convenient, which matters when you’re hauling luggage and trying to figure out Japanese signage. The staff genuinely seems to enjoy working there – not that forced hospitality you sometimes get at fancy places. If you’re planning to visit, book well ahead for autumn when the leaves turn, but honestly? Winter might be even better when everything’s covered in snow and you’ve got that whole dramatic contrast thing happening between the hot springs and the frozen landscape.

The public onsens which also includes outdoor areas are great size and also great facility to use. Room is large, well thought out, and great facilities like a ryokan Food here, both the buffet and kaiseki were exceptional. We enjoyed two kaiseki evening meals with dishes changing each night and well worth the experience (the quality meals are probably half the accommodation cost )The property has nice central lobby area you can relax in. Venue is short walk to lake.

Dinner was delicious with high quality food and service. Breakfast buffet had a big variety to choose from. The onsen had many baths and the outdoor bath was beautiful and relaxing. It was a treat to choose desserts from the patisserie and our room had pudding in the fridge. The marsh mellow BBQ at night was fun for the kids. What could be...

What could be improved: The room did not have yukata or resort wear in children size. The staff said they would give us but did not follow through. The night time staff at the BBQ seemed tired and not very friendly to children.

In the resort, they give you white socks to walk around, and that is the testament on the cleanliness level as the socks are still white after a night's stay there. We enjoyed having drinks at the bar near the hearth at the lounge, and just chilled to the talented harpist playing her tunes.

Wished we could have stayed another night, but there aren't many activities around the area during winter.

What could be improved: Nothing.

The onsen. The space and the large rooms.

What could be improved: Buffet meals were the same everyday. Could do with a change of variety.
Bit disappointed that there are no rooms with a lake view.

The room and resort facilities were very well maintained. The variety of indoor and outdoor onsen with different temperature levels was very nice. The buffet was excellent. Our son has food allergies and the staff provided a daily print-out of the foods to avoid even though the buffet was clearly labeled. It was a very thoughtful gesture. We also tried the special lake fish and sake from the dinner and drink menu and it was excellent. There was also a live harp performance each night that we stayed, which was very relaxing. The resort staff also suggested many hiking and lake activities for our family to do when we asked for their opinion and recommendations. We highly recommend the resort for the food, ambiance, and high quality onsen facilities.

What could be improved: We loved our stay. If we had to make any suggestion, maybe provide drinking water in the room.
