Lake View by Town

You know what? I’ve stayed at a lot of places around Taupo over the years, and Lake View by Town hits that sweet spot where you’re close enough to everything but not drowning in tourist chaos. The thing is, most people think you have to choose between being right on the lake or being near the town center – but this place on Lake Terrace sort of gives you both without the premium price tag of those massive resort complexes.

The location is honestly perfect if you actually want to experience Taupo like a person, not just tick off Instagram spots. You’re literally a three-minute walk to the main drag where all the decent cafes are (and I mean the ones locals go to, not just the tourist traps), but when you step out onto your balcony in the morning, you’ve got this gorgeous lake view that changes completely depending on the weather. On clear days, you can see the mountains reflected in the water, and when it’s moody and cloudy – which happens more than the tourism board likes to admit – it’s actually even more dramatic. The rooms themselves feel more like a really nice apartment than a sterile hotel room, which I appreciate. There’s proper space to spread out, the beds are actually comfortable (not just hotel-marketing comfortable), and the bathrooms have that rainfall shower situation that doesn’t feel gimmicky. I mean, after a day of hiking around the Craters of the Moon or doing the Tongariro crossing, you want a shower that works properly, you know?

What really gets me about this place is the little stuff that shows someone’s paying attention. The parking is easy – and free, which matters more than you’d think when you’re dealing with a rental car and unfamiliar streets. The front desk people actually know the area well enough to give you real recommendations, not just hand you a generic brochure. They’ll tell you which walking tracks are worth your time and which ones are basically just tourist exercises in disappointment. Plus, and this might sound silly, but the Wi-Fi actually works throughout the building, which has been a problem at other places I’ve stayed around here. The 9.2 rating makes total sense once you’ve been there – it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in New Zealand, but it does everything it promises to do really well. The only minor thing I’d mention is that if you’re a super light sleeper, the street-facing rooms can pick up some noise from Lake Terrace in the early morning, but honestly, it’s just normal town sounds, not party noise. If you’re the type who needs complete silence, just ask for a lake-facing room when you book. Overall, it’s the kind of place I’d actually stay at again, which is saying something because I usually like to try somewhere new each time I’m in Taupo.
