HOTEL OVERVIEW

You know what caught me off guard about Languor B&B? The name actually makes perfect sense once you’re there. I mean, this place on Waihakeke Road is basically designed to make you slow down and forget whatever deadline you thought was important back home. It’s one of those spots where you pull up the gravel drive – about five minutes out from Carterton’s main strip – and immediately feel your shoulders drop.

The whole setup is honestly pretty clever. Sarah and Mike (the owners) have this knack for making the place feel like you’re staying with friends who just happen to have impeccable taste and actually know how to cook a proper breakfast. The rooms are in this beautifully restored villa that’s got all the character you’d want – original timber floors that creak just enough to be charming, not annoying – but they’ve been smart about the modern touches. Really good water pressure, which matters more than people admit, and blackout curtains that actually work. I stayed in the garden room and could hear the bellbirds going off at dawn, which sounds like it might be irritating but was actually kind of magical.

What really sets this place apart though is how plugged in they are to what’s actually worth doing around here. Sarah steered me toward this little walking track that cuts through to the Waiohine River – maybe twenty minutes from the B&B – that I never would’ve found otherwise. And honestly, their breakfast situation is ridiculous in the best way. Fresh eggs from their own chickens, proper coffee, and this sourdough that Mike apparently takes way too seriously (in a good way). They’ve got this covered deck where you eat looking out over the paddocks, and if you’re lucky you’ll spot some of the neighbor’s sheep doing whatever it is sheep do that’s weirdly entertaining to watch.

The location is sort of perfect if you want to explore Wairarapa properly. You’re close enough to Carterton for supplies or a decent pub meal, but far enough out that it actually feels rural. Greytown’s antique shops are maybe fifteen minutes if you’re into that scene, and honestly, the drive to Martinborough’s wineries is pretty spectacular – especially if you time it for late afternoon when the light hits the ranges just right. Parking’s never an issue, which is refreshing, and the whole property has this quiet that’s hard to find these days. No road noise, just wind in the trees and the occasional cow having opinions about something.

Look, I’ve stayed in plenty of B&Bs that try too hard to be quaint or feel like you’re imposing on someone’s personal space. Languor gets the balance right – professional enough that you feel properly looked after, personal enough that you leave with restaurant recommendations and maybe an invitation to come back. That 9.3 rating isn’t just people being polite; this place actually delivers on making you feel like you’ve discovered something special without having to rough it.

Quiet rural area, lovely house and garden, swimming pool and hot tub were great, not too far from nearby towns, sufficient and varied breakfast, comfortable beds

What could be improved: The kitchenette was rather limited in that there’s no running water or sink and a microwave would have been useful.

Lovely country location yet close to town and beautiful surroundings (loved the roses). Tasteful decor, very clean and bed was very comfortable. Yummy breakfast provisions hit the spot. Dog was friendly. Spa was just right after a week at work and a wee drive.

What could be improved: Nothing to complain about.

Loved the quiet of the country but still an easy drive to the local towns.
Rooms and beds were great, perfect to have breakfast and get out the door each day. We weren't cold even with the frosty mornings. 9

What could be improved: Was there for work... I should go back and enjoy being there!
