Le Grand Karuizawa Hotel and Resort Overview
You know what honestly surprised me about Le Grand Karuizawa? It’s tucked away in this quiet corner of Hocchi that most tourists never find – I mean, you’re literally surrounded by forest on three sides, but somehow it doesn’t feel isolated. The drive up from Karuizawa Station takes about fifteen minutes through these winding mountain roads, and just when you think you’ve taken a wrong turn, there it is.
The thing that gets me about this place is how they’ve managed to feel genuinely luxurious without being stuffy about it. The lobby has these massive windows that frame the mountains perfectly, and there’s always this subtle scent of hinoki wood that just makes you relax immediately. Check-in was smooth – they actually remembered I’d mentioned it was my anniversary when I booked online, which honestly caught me off guard in the best way. The staff here speaks excellent English, but they’ll also patiently help if you want to practice your Japanese (I tried, they were very kind about my terrible pronunciation).
What really sold me though was stepping onto our room’s balcony that first evening. You can hear absolutely nothing except wind through the trees and maybe some distant bird calls – it’s the kind of quiet that makes you realize how much noise you live with normally. The rooms themselves are spacious without feeling cavernous, and they’ve got this perfect blend of modern amenities with traditional Japanese touches. The onsen is smaller than what you’d find at some of the bigger resorts, but that actually works in its favor – never crowded, always peaceful. I’d suggest going around sunset if you can swing it. Fair warning though: if you’re coming during autumn foliage season (late October), book way ahead and expect to pay premium prices – but honestly, waking up to those maple trees is worth every yen. The restaurant leans heavily into local Shinshu ingredients, and their take on kaiseki dinner felt special without being intimidating. Only minor gripe? The WiFi gets a bit spotty in some of the mountain-facing rooms, but let’s be real – you’re here to disconnect anyway.

I love how nice and cosy the hotel was.
The staff were also very kind throughout our stay.
We really enjoyed the onsen.
What could be improved: The toilet bidet was making the toilet seat wet all the time..
The hotel was very beautiful (very old school style) but we knew that when booking so we were not surprised. Beautiful onsen to sit and relax in and well at rotenburo (outside bath)and dinner was just fantastic. The beds were also very comfortable...
Comfortable with a wonderful onsen
What could be improved: Quiet and staff didn’t readily speak English
Onsen is good, but its opening time is not enough at night.
