Lemon Tree Vembanad Lake Resort, Kerala

So I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to the Lemon Tree Vembanad Lake Resort, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. You know how sometimes a place looks amazing online and then you arrive and it’s just… fine? Well, this one’s a bit of a mixed bag, actually.

The location is genuinely spectacular though – I mean, you’re right on Vembanad Lake with these incredible backwater views that’ll make your Instagram followers properly jealous. It’s tucked away in Muhamma, which is sort of west of the main Kumarakom tourist hub, so you get that peaceful vibe without being completely cut off from civilization. The drive along Jana Sakthi Road is pretty scenic once you get past some of the more industrial bits near Alleppey. What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets in the evenings – you can actually hear the water lapping and the occasional fisherman’s boat puttering by, which is exactly what you want when you’re trying to decompress from city life.

The resort itself has that contemporary Kerala architecture thing going on, lots of wood and open spaces that blend into the landscape rather nicely. Check-in was smooth enough, and the staff genuinely seemed to know the area well – they pointed me toward some local spots that weren’t in any guidebook I’d seen. The rooms are spacious with those floor-to-ceiling windows facing the lake (well, most of them anyway), and honestly, waking up to that view never got old during my stay. The bathrooms are modern, though I did notice some minor maintenance issues – nothing deal-breaking, just the kind of things you notice when you’re paying attention.

Here’s the thing though – and maybe this is why the rating sits at 6.0 despite the five-star designation – some aspects feel like they’re still finding their rhythm. The restaurant has this ambitious menu but the execution can be hit or miss. When it’s good, it’s really good, especially their fish curry which uses proper local catch. But I had a couple meals that were just okay, you know? The pool area is lovely during off-peak hours, but it can get surprisingly crowded when tour groups roll through. If you’re planning to visit, I’d honestly recommend avoiding the peak season rush between December and February unless you don’t mind sharing your zen moment with a few dozen other people.

What really sold me on the place was the backwater access – you can literally step from the resort onto a traditional houseboat or canoe without dealing with the chaos of the main Kumarakom jetty. That alone might be worth the stay if you’re serious about exploring the backwaters properly. The sunset views from their deck are genuinely breathtaking, and there’s something about sipping a beer while watching the light change over the water that makes you forget about whatever maintenance quirks you might have noticed earlier. It’s not perfect, but it’s got character and that view – well, that view is pretty hard to argue with.
